Agency Chief tells Mums to get off Facebook and play with their kids?!

"Gerry Graf thinks the Internet is getting a little out of hand. So, the longtime TBWA\Chiat\Day and Saatchi & Saatchi creative director, who recently opened his own agency, Barton F. Graf 9000, whipped up the video below called "The Log Off," encouraging moms everywhere to put down the Facebook and play with their kids instead. "

Check out the YouTube video here

Whilst I understand the sentiment, why just MUMS?? Shock] anger

What about all the Dads on their ipads and blackberrys all weekends?

(Clearly designed to be controversial and drum up support for his new agency, but I bet it will backfire spectacularly!)

Shudder how awful... though there have definitely been other anti-morning sickness drugs and I THINK thalylomide came later - more 60's. Doesn't bear thinking about anyway

KatieMiddleton · 07/05/2011 17:45

DH reckons "Barton F. Graf 9000" sounds like a tractor or 1980s computer system Grin

jackstarb · 07/05/2011 17:47

Oops - just tweeted Graf's top client, online travel company @KAYAK, a link to this thread.

Just so they can see what some of their target market think of their advertising agency Wink.

And honestly, who directed this embarrassingly bad video? Those kids looking daft while mouthing the awful, awful song, the black background with the mothers in harsh lighting (like, did he want to be expressionistic ?)... If this tosser wanted publicity, he surely is going about it the wrong way - his production values suck.

tralalala · 07/05/2011 19:00

Why just mothers funking twat.

Of course some parents spent to much time on the internet and some non-parents do.
Some kids are neglected as they always have been it''s just a bit easier to do now as you get lost in to the computer in a way you don't watching tv. (bit like driving and chatting is less distracting than driving and being on a mobile, not sure why but it)

Some of you lot know that you spent too much time on here, but will all get defensive as all addicts do.

That said why just mothers, what about dads at w/e on the playstation/ebay whatever... sexist twat.

Cornflakemum · 07/05/2011 21:50

Oh my... check out his own Facebook page

"Our goal is world fame" - oh well, he'll certainly get that... but for all the wrong reasons!

I think there are definitely women who spend too much time on the internet when they should be spending time with their kids. Are they the majority? No. Do most women use the internet to avoid their children? No. It's like anything you care to mention - of course it can negatively impact your life, but so can overuse of almost anything.
He probably targeted it at women because he'd lose a small percentage of his fortune if he couldn't clamp his phone to his ear 24/7. Besides, men's work is sooo important, we all have to be quiet and understanding and keep those unfortunate results of sex out of his way.

Gooseberrybushes · 07/05/2011 23:15

I used to ignore the children to read parenting books

my mum used to ignore us to read the Guardian

perhaps people use to ignore their children to make samplers

it's a grand tradition that needs to be upheld

Gooseberrybushes · 07/05/2011 23:16

and yes it's chuffing awful he only talks about mothers

sloggies · 08/05/2011 10:17

I have been on the Facebook page and reported it to Facebook as sexist. Very childish, but satisfying.....

DontCallMePeanut · 08/05/2011 13:24

I've taken a break from 5,000 words worth of essays, which have been put off after taking DS on holiday for five days. That was five days, without internet anyway, where I couldn't do said essays cos I needed some pretty important stats. Add to that, the revision.

But damn, I suppose it's a case of I shouldn't be studying if I have a DC.

BTW: DS (3) is sat next to me, with a book in hand, trying to write his letters. It's taken me ten minutes to write this (even though I have a 43wpm normally) because I'm alternating between typing this and helping him with his letters.

flickor · 08/05/2011 20:29

If this guy is so against Mums being on facebook - why post it online in the first place ?. Just a cheap publicity stunt as times are quite hard for ad agencies. Why is he not at home playing with his kids if he is so bothered by it ?

Fairymitzi · 08/05/2011 20:33

i too often feel guilty about being on internet, if i was any good i'd wait till my boys were in bed.. when we were away last week i felt so much more connected, more eye contact & interest.

NickRobinsonsloveslave · 08/05/2011 20:40

I agree that Mumsnet should get this bloke on for a webchat. We could all post absolutely nothing....then apologise to him as we were too busy playing with our DCs to participate!

Fairymitzi · 08/05/2011 20:51

haha! good idea!;)

naughtymummy · 09/05/2011 07:53

2 hours screen time per day is enough for anyone, no matter what their age. Like 14 units of alcohol, 5 fruit and veg and 20-30 mins of cardiovascular activity. We all try sometimes we fail we are human.

valiumbandwitch · 09/05/2011 13:25

HerBEggs is correct. My x used to hate me being on the internet. Random women telling me to value myself, telling me to negotiate instead of 'compromising' again. NO wonder he hated it.

Insomnia11 · 09/05/2011 14:27

Someone should tell him that people spend more time with their kids more than ever parents ever have these days.

ITA. i think i fail on all counts right now. but 14 units a day???? i really should try harder...Wine

both my babes are asleep. i do have washing to sort out but one of said babes is asleep on my chest so i really can't do anything other than MN (in between knitting rows...). i would be a bad mummy to deprive him of my warmth...

NotaMopsa · 09/05/2011 19:57

it IS a generalisation i agree and was ill thought through i agree but i think the generalisation was essentially because women are the main care giver in the majority of stay at home parents

BoffinMum · 10/05/2011 11:38

Two hours of screen time? You're doomed in a job like mine then, which is screen based ...

cherryburton · 10/05/2011 17:18

Jesus, I have 7.5 hours a day in front of a screen and that's just at work...
