Is there such a thing as a well-balanced news provider with a neutral stance?

C4 news at 7pm is pretty good

i also like c5 at 5pm as it's more magaziney in style and fun

claig · 30/04/2011 08:07

Have you considered the Daily Mail newspaper and its online edition?

PrettyCandles · 30/04/2011 08:13

Sorry, I missed out online.

How about going straight to the agencies, Reuters etc

methodsandmaterials · 30/04/2011 08:29

Al-Jazeera is brilliant.
No, I'm not joking, don't let the fact that it's an Arab-owned news channel put you off. Extremely balanced, thoughtful reporting (many of their reporters are ex-BBC anyway) and they cover stories that you'd never here about on the BBC.

Russia Today has really high production values...and a nice, subtle anti-American stance if you like that sort of viewpoint.

Also similar to Al Jaseera in that it's not just the same old news stories/themes that exist in the Western news editorial agenda.

HHLimbo · 03/05/2011 02:01

Its stance has noticeably changed. It seems the BBC has gone over to the dark side. Nooooooo....

Mellowfruitfulness · 03/05/2011 20:38

HHLimbo, I agree. I've been finding the BBC really irritating for the last few months. They seem to be letting the Tories set the agenda. I don't think they ever used to do that. Are they worried that the government will give in to pressure from the other channels to stop letting the Beeb charge us a licence fee?

Saltire · 04/05/2011 09:03

I only watch the BBC news becasue I will admit to having a little bit of a crush on the lovely Huw EdwardsBlush

HHLimbo · 04/05/2011 20:42

I agree they must be feeling pressure from some sources.. this sounds like one of them
Cameron's spin doctor, Craig Oliver a former BBC editor,
misusing his influence

maypole1 · 04/05/2011 22:19

Or e news ha hahahahahahaha

scurryfunge · 04/05/2011 22:22

May I recommend the Oswestry and Border Counties Advertiser.

Mellowfruitfulness · 04/05/2011 22:29

You may. But why?

scurryfunge · 04/05/2011 22:34

It has a particularly unbiased view of Dog Gets Run Over On High Street stories and other nationally relevant stories.

OldMumsy · 07/05/2011 11:43

Mellow....
You may think that the BBC have become biased in favour of the Conservatives but in fact they have just become less biased in favour of Labour and the Lib Dems, you don't understand where the middle actually is.

Mellowfruitfulness · 07/05/2011 15:12

OldMumsy, I think the BBC are letting the Tories set the agenda, ie choose the topics up for discussion, phrase things in the same way etc. All it takes for that to happen is for the very small group of people in charge of the news broadcasts not to question some of the assumptions in their sources. That's not to say they support them, they just don't challenge them. I find that worrying.

And I don't want a news broadcaster to take the middle way! I just want them to report as many sides to each question as possible, to help us all to explore the issues a little more, and not accept things at face value.

Most of the time I think the BBC is excellent - I must be one of its greatest fans. Some of its programmes are second to none, imo.

"Russia Today has really high production values...and a nice, subtle anti-American stance if you like that sort of viewpoint"

Just don't expect to hear anything about Russian dodginess in the Caucasus...

Seriously, the Beeb still regularly gets pilloried by the Torygraph etc for its left/liberal bias, so they obviously don't perceive it as pro-Tory.
