What complete barstards!!! Gasped when I saw their 'Bonkers Bruno' headline today. I see they've changed it now on their website but still, let's email the bastards.

email the Sun

people have to vote with their feet: after the Hillsborough treachery, people in Liverpool and Sheffield stopped buying the atrocious rag; they have never recovered their financial position and Kelvin Mackenzie was sacked.Does it make any of us feel better that the editor of aforementioned garbage is a woman now ? no - it makes me feel worse ! I never buy anything associated with Murdoch and that is why I will not have sky television in my house. You have to make these choices even though you think they might not make any difference, because actually, they just might.

marthamoo · 23/09/2003 15:43

I would boycott it but I would never have that rag in my house in the first place..I hate the fact that it's still the biggest selling newspaper in this country.

It seems to be fairly acceptable to make fun of the mentally ill - it made me equally angry when Mark Lamarr et al (on Never Mind the Buzzcocks) were ripping the p* out of Adam Ant when he was sectioned.

They ought to have a little more compassion as it really is a case of "There but for the grace of God..."

easy · 23/09/2003 15:55

Fio, not withdrwn them, but I heard on the radio this morning that the "Bonkers" headline was the Sun's first edition, and changed for the 2nd editions.

Personally have never read more than 2 or 3 pages of the Sun (once at MILs house when I couldn't bear to take part in the conversation). I wouldn't allow it in the house, even before today.... should add that to the snobs thread.

Tinker · 23/09/2003 19:40

Oh, let's hope they've been bombarded with emails. Afraid mine was, er, a little incoherent with inarticulate pissed-offness. I didn't want to title the thread 'Let's boycott the Sun' because I knew mumsnetters wouldn't buy it in the first place

And donnie, I agree with. Don't have Sky for the same reasons.

did anyone see richard and judy though? ithink they should have got some people who knew about mental health in to talk about the subject...

XAusted · 23/09/2003 21:05

The Sun makes me sick. Just emailed them. Hope they lose lots and lots of sales.

XAusted · 23/09/2003 21:06

PS - well done, Tinker, I wouldn't have remembered to take any action if you hadn't mentioned it.

katierocket · 23/09/2003 21:16

here here donnie, well said.

Twink · 23/09/2003 22:19

Channel 4 news reported that there were '100 complaints from the public', so mostly from Mumsnetters then ! It's the first time I've ever complained to a newspaper, thanks Tinker for setting it off.

Dh reckons it will have been a major under-report of the real numbers, particularly as (allegedly !) The Sun have been fairly rude about Bruno for some time and that they've totally misjudged how their readers will react.

Looks like the sh*t hit the fan yesterday .

Too little too late IMO.

WSM · 24/09/2003 09:24

I agree Pie, smacks of desperate backtracking to me.

3GirlsMum · 24/09/2003 09:41

Did u see that the Sun are rallying around now! A little too late in my opinion and they have set up a fund for Bruno now. My thoughts are with him and his family, must be bad enough without all the media intrusion.

doormat · 24/09/2003 09:42

You are jesting 3girlsmum.
The cheeky bastards

3GirlsMum · 24/09/2003 10:07

No they have it on the front page:-

THE SUN

WSM · 24/09/2003 10:10

That is the same link as Pie put up I think

katierocket · 24/09/2003 10:13

I really think Rebecca Wade should be made to answer personally for allowing the initial article to be printed. I'm sure she'd love that written about one of her family members. And how she can have the gall to now make out they are so caring.

Queenie · 24/09/2003 10:49

The hospital that Frank Bruno has been admitted to is just down the road from me (10 mins). The amount of media/press outside there yesterday was disgusting - blocking the pavements and road with their equipment and vans. There is another hospital just next door to this one which has A&E and Maternity wings - the ambulances entry and exit were being affected by the "rabble". Even this morning GMTV had a report from outside the hospital, why?? What we were told could have been read from the studio. What are they expecting to see anyway? FB in a straight jacket!! There is no compassion or respect from any corner of the media/press as far as I can see and they excuse their behaviour with "in the public interest" and "only doing my job". You expect rubbish from The Sun even though they do continue to surpass themselves with the depths of bad taste they sink to but I think as a whole it's all pretty bad out there in media land.

Tinker · 24/09/2003 13:48

Blimey, just went to add to this thread at same time as geting an email from the Sun. No apology though .

See there is no apology on their front page either. No doubt anticipating drop in sales and/or being sued therefore going for the sentimental vote.

Twink - that '100 letters of complaint' comment was in the Independent today as well. It did say 'readers' (contradiction in terms?) so wonder how many non-readers wrote as well. Don't believe that figure for a minute.

OP posts:
Tinker · 24/09/2003 13:49

And katierocket - agree with you about Rebekah (sp?) Wade. Apparently she had just left the office when the original headline went to print. Hmm, right.

OP posts:
katierocket · 24/09/2003 19:30

tinker - I hadn't heard that. What a rubbish excuse - there is no way that the editor of a national would allow something that potentially contraversional to be printed without her knowledge. shame on her she should take responsibility for her actions.
