Shock Good lord. I wonder what happened there. How awful Sad

hellodave · 08/04/2011 18:53

horrible...early days i suppose but the papers are reporting it was member of the crew. dont know how accurate this is but either way not just the three involved but that whole crew will be having a seriously bad time at the mo. Sad

EdithWeston · 08/04/2011 18:59

Any concerned crew families can contact the MoD's Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre on 0845 7800 900.

Just terrible. I lived with the Submariners when they were based in Gosport. Such a top bunch of guys. What an tragedy. Heart goes out to families involved Sad

meditrina · 08/04/2011 21:29

A terrible thing indeed.

I thought it was very inappropriate of the councillor (mayor? Royston somebody) to have given such a detailed account of the event to the media this evening, when it is still so early in the police's criminal investigation.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow · 08/04/2011 22:11

I've just seen this interview and I don't think the councillors account of events was inappropriate. No-one was mentioned by name.

meditrina · 08/04/2011 22:56

The last from the MoD was that they were making no further statements until they had informed the families. They have yet to confirm this has been done.

There are some circumstances where it is better to wait.

LauraNorder · 08/04/2011 23:11

I also think it was an odd interview to give. If you had been involved in something like that and had done what he said he did would you have given an interview that night? I think I would be in shock!

Tommy · 09/04/2011 07:53

I think the councillor was advised to give that interview. DM journos were already door stepping yesterday evening

meditrina · 09/04/2011 07:57

Advised by whom?

The doorstepping is loathsome. And I note that the press is running names of those concerned, even though MoD have yet to confirm them.

If it was your loved one - maybe not your formal NOK (who would be visited) but wider family or close friend - would you prefer to find out personally, or from a newspaper?

Tommy · 09/04/2011 09:28

I guess that's why the MOD haven't released the names yet - just the crappy papers that think they have the right to do it first.

Advised probably by Council media office? He didn't give any names so was being careful about what he said

meditrina · 09/04/2011 09:32

Even without names, it's wrong to promulgate such a level of detail so early on. I notice that the BBC is showing only a much reduced version today, which is an improvement. Clearer heads in the morning?

scaryteacher · 09/04/2011 10:59

I expect the Councillor was also advised by the MoD as well. The NoK would have been informed asap. Names are in the DT this morning.

This has never happened before; the submarine world is a very closeknit one and they all trust each other implicitly professionally; they have to.

heliumballoons · 09/04/2011 11:04

Its in our local news today - a lot which I want to watch but DS is sick and watching cbeebies.

I live between Portsmouth and S'ton (near Gosport). Its a very navel area and everyone here is shocked as its so close to home. Sad

My thoughts go out to those families whos relatives died or were injured.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 09/04/2011 11:06

What's NoK?

Really shocking.

scaryteacher · 09/04/2011 11:14

Next of Kin - Helium - I think you might mean Naval!

heliumballoons · 09/04/2011 14:51

I typed naval then changed it Blush

scaryteacher · 09/04/2011 16:26
Grin
ilovemydogandMrObama · 09/04/2011 17:47

Hope this doesn't sound disrespectful, but it was on a submarine with Navy personnel. I don't understand why the Hampshire police are involved? Don't the military investigate their own?

mpsw · 09/04/2011 17:53

Not necessarily - murder in the UK is always dealt with by the civilian police (also other serious crimes, and sometimes in UK bases overseas).

Verbiage taken from another site: "Memorandum of Understanding - in peacetime HantsPlod Major Crime Dept investigate all serious offences on vessels in / departed from So'ton Docks, including military at Marchwood. Sometime helo'd in to vessels under way, sometimes cross-decked from smaller craft. In this incident can bring more professional resources to bear more swiftly than any other, including family support, thus fast resolution for loved ones whatever the reasons or outcome.".

MrsSnaplegs · 09/04/2011 17:56

Being investigated by civilian police as it will be taken to civilian court as it was a civilian crime. Military police will be assisting but for scenes of Crome, evidence etc it is essential that the experts are used. Thankfully the military police do not have to investigate crimes like this regularly.

A sad loss to the submarine world. I knew Moly and he was a good man. Sad my thoughts are with his family
