Genetically modified cows to produce "human" milk

Wow. Just, wow!

I mean, I'm all for improving feeding options for babies who aren't breastfed. And I don't really have any issue with GM stuff. And I'm a scientist so on the one hand, I think this is really cool!

However, as an animal rights campaigner, I think is just awful for the cows - totally intensively farmed, stillbirths, high calf mortality. Yuk.

What do you think?

insanity.

CornishTwinMoominMamma · 07/04/2011 13:55

Don't like. Ick.

But what's so 'yuck' about it? Formula is heavily processed cow's milk. So why is it any more horrible when the procesing is done inside the cow instead of in a factory, and the result is a milk much closer to human milk than formula?

I'd give it to my babies in an instant above formula. My only concern is the animal welfare.

The only issue here is the question of the possibility that it may increase the risk of species jumping viruses.

Cows are all ready treated like shit, so the welfare issue is none existent really compared to current milk production, where the cow is made pregnant, the calf taken away within 3 days and the cow given drugs to increase the yield until it dries up and they are made pregnant again. (the calfs of course are fed on formula for about 2 months and then eaten anyway).

Did they not all ready produce GM pigs with human like blood cells for use in organ transplants?.

Poor cows. I wonder if the financial impact of not having calves to take to market will affect the financial viability of this project.

anabelish · 07/04/2011 20:42

its weird and its still processed food. Its still a poor substitute. I can possibly see it being used in third world and emergency situations but would anyone want to experiment by giving it to their child?

how are you supposed to attach the babies to the udders? Confused
