I think this is a wonderful thank you and honour to the town.

Fantastic isn't it? I didn't think we still 'royalled' (?) places these days but it's lovely that a whole town can get an honour.

LtEveDallas · 16/03/2011 14:40

Brilliant news! I'm really pleased for the town and the people there.

nobiggy · 16/03/2011 14:41

They should make it Royyall Wootton Bassett.

reinitindear · 16/03/2011 15:02

Totally deserved, the towns residents have acted with dignity and compassion.

FourFortyFour · 16/03/2011 16:41

It is so moving watching the soldiers from previous wars honouring the soldiers from our current war.

it's nice but I'm glad in a way that the town will have a rest from all this soon, though will be sad to see Lyneham go for the area - but Wootten Bassett needs some peace and quiet.

Buda · 16/03/2011 16:48

I thought it was lovely too.

glasnost · 17/03/2011 09:55

It's not lovely. It's condescending and patronising. Why don't they send the freeloading royals to die in far flung lands? It also confirms the fact that the twenty first century is characterised by a return of serfdom.

loftyclodflop · 17/03/2011 09:59

oh belt up, glasnost.

glasnost · 17/03/2011 10:00

Er, no. There's still freedom of expression I believe. So flop off you clod.

mumoverseas · 17/03/2011 10:06

You are totally right glasnost, there is still freedom of expression.
I think you are a twat and are being offensive and insulting to the many hundreds of british servicement who have lost their lives

glasnost · 17/03/2011 10:14

The insulting insensitive ones are those who send them to die in the first place. Go figure. Doesn't take alot of brain power to get to that point.

The foreign royal so called family are part of the false patriotic notions that produce cannon fodder. So it's insulting to me they deign to prefix Wooton with royal. And twat is a tad strong for someone you disagree with. I would never dreeeeeeeeeam of calling a fellow mumsnetter that even though there are evidently plenty of them out there.

meditrina · 17/03/2011 10:22

Well, Prince Andrew flew during the Falklands Conflict, and Prince Harry did as much of an Afghanistan tour as he could. That's quite a high proportion from the families in the line of succession. And the Duke of Edinbugh's medals were earned on active service too. So I think the Royal family do put themselves into harm's way.

I was pleased to see this honour for the town.

glasnost · 17/03/2011 10:33

They never truly get in harm's way. It's all part of the propaganda needed to occasionally show the serfs that they care about our country really as opposed to just leeching off us and living the high life. They can go swivel and the wedding is an insult too in times of economic strife.

FourFortyFour · 17/03/2011 10:39

Clearly everyone is entitled to their opinion and imo glasnost, this is not the thread to express that opinion.

OP posts:
meditrina · 17/03/2011 10:40

I think you are factually wrong about Princes Andrew, Harry and Phillip.

The Royal Wedding isn't really relevant to recognition of the spontaneous and consistent public demonstration of support to families of the bereaved.

elphabadefiesgravity · 17/03/2011 10:44

Prince Harry was only removed from Afghanistan becasue someone leaked details and he became a target and more of a danger to those he was serving with.

MooMooFarm · 17/03/2011 10:45

Don't want to get into name-calling or arguing with anyone - but just wanted to say that I agree with glasnost [runs for cover]

SoupDragon · 17/03/2011 10:46

Why don't you try and make some kind of comment relevant to the thread, glasnost, instead of simply spouting your anti royal feelings in general.

withagoat · 17/03/2011 10:49

I'm utterly anti royal. Still think it's lovely

FourFortyFour · 17/03/2011 12:19

meditrina - you said this - "I think you are factually wrong about Princes Andrew, Harry and Phillip. Put us right then.

The Royal Wedding isn't really relevant to recognition of the spontaneous and consistent public demonstration of support to families of the bereaved."

Confused We are discussing Wootton Bassett becoming Royal, not the wedding.

As a local to the area and a frequent visitor I am delighted for the residents of WB.

Fourfortyfour: this thread is about the recognition of a town which stood with the bereaved.

I do not wish to derail it further - information on the operational military records of the Royal family is readily available should anyone google it. The reference to the Royal Wedding was solely in response to a comment by an earlier poster, And I was Confused too at it's being raised in this thread.

Bumperlicious · 17/03/2011 12:50

My MIL who is 82 and a Bassett resident aka The Prophet of Doom said 'If you don't put Royal on your post now it won't get to you'. I'm sure that given that Bassett was around before the national postal service it will still miraculously find it's way there with or without the Royal. Nice that she looks on the bright side as usual Grin
