FCO have issued a new travel advisory 15 March text here, following today's imposition of a state of emergency.

It says that unless it is essential for young remain in Bahrain, you should start making preparations to leave; also recommends that you don't go out overnight.

Not possible to tell from UK if this is sensible and proportionate advice, but thought it's worth posting in case there are MNetters who might not (yet) be on consular information flows.

Stay safe, everyone.

I assume then both Chaotica and slim have spent a lot of time in Saudi Arabia?

slim22 · 16/03/2011 17:18

No not me but I was born in an arab country, I was born a muslim, I speak arabic and although I have lived in the western world pretty much all my life, I follow news in arabic and have close friends and family in pretty much every country from Morocco to Indonesia, so I do think I have a pretty decent first hand understanding of the sentiment.

Since you are there am curious to hear your perspective on life there.

Here's the current report from the BBC.

This is not looking good.

Well I was born in the UK and am catholic. I have lived in KSA over 5 years (DH for 12 years) and I speak a little arabic.
At first I found it very hard to deal with the fact that I couldn't practice my religion here and I had so many restrictions. However, I have learned to live with it over the years and now accept it as a way of life. I have two choices. I could go home or I could stay and respect the religion and laws of where I live. This doesn't mean that I agree with them all, I just have to accept them.

I have many Saudi friends who are lovely people and pesonally found the saudi f**ers' comment offensive.

Sad and Lybia is no better but off the news cycle......there are people still trying to leave Lybia

meditrina · 16/03/2011 17:47

Here is the latest BBc report on Libya.

The Bahrain situation is worrying, isn't it? Foreign troops already on the ground supporting one side in a sectarian dispute, and Iran in the wings. Or is there a more benign way to see this?

My sil is currently camping out at the airport - she has a flight on Friday. Keeping my fingers crossed for her - while being very mindful of the fact that expats are lucky to be able to get out if they want to. I hope the side that wins is the side that represents the wishes of the majority of Bahrainis. But I worry that Western oil interests will have more influence than anything.

mumoverseas · 16/03/2011 17:58

seeker fingers crossed for your SIL

frecklyspeckly · 16/03/2011 21:01

i am also crossing my fingers for DHs friend and his wife and their 2 children aged 11 and 5 (sad)
have lost contact since they moved last summer for work, thinking it would be safe for them there.

slim22 · 17/03/2011 01:01

good morning all,

I hope they managed to fly out. Its very unnerving for an expat family to be caught in this sort of situation.
Even when, all things considered its fairly benign, being away from your normal support system is very unsettling.

Meditrina and seeker, I think this is just another "hunger" protest.

Lets do a little comparison:

In tunisia, everybody applauds, no one has any vested interest / its secular so no big worry there (many still raised the concern of radical Islam, out of ignorance I suppose)

Lybia A bit more of a problem with oil, so let's turn a blind eye, thankfully the news cycle allows it, Islam not a problem just as above (again I think there is a bit of ignorance here, Lybia would actually be very fertile ground for AQMI). I would thing there will be a problem here. why is everyone so oblivious?

Egypt, well kudos to the people because western diplomacy definitely showed its limits and cowardice there.

Bahrain....800,000 american troops, biggest base in the gulf. strong ties to equally wealthy neighbors.
Mega buck to European countries on various industrial contracts. And oil of course which is becoming a pricier comodity by the day. Who cares if they bash a religious minority. Let everyone think its a sectarian problem. Western diplomats must have been so happy to hear Ahmadinejat comment on it so it gives them an opportunity to remind us of that threat too.

Again, my view is that people are hungry, they want to raise their children in dignity and be safe in their homes.
I do feel the west is turning a blind eye because money speaks louder than words and letting the press spin these situations into something they are not.

slim22 · 17/03/2011 01:17

sorry just a correction, Bahrain has a Shia MAJORITY (so when I said minority it is in socio-economic terms) and ruled by a sunni elite. completely feudal.

seeker · 17/03/2011 23:12

Sil's home.

meditrina · 17/03/2011 23:13

You must be so relieved!
