that is a miracle :)

This is totally amazing - such a heart warming story.

Misleading title on that article as the baby wasn't actually dead.

lubeybooby · 03/03/2011 23:56

Was just going to say what piprabbit said. Very insensitive misleading title too (not you OP, them)

the baby wasn't actually dead? but they are calling her 'stillborn'

so this technique can't help stillborn babies? :(

FourFingeredKitkat · 04/03/2011 00:34

33.5C is hardly freezing

piprabbit · 04/03/2011 00:42

It sounds as though the baby had a very traumatic brith, during which she suffered lack of oxygen to the brain for a lengthy period. But it doesn't sound as though the baby was actually declared dead at any point.
The doctors decided to cool her down to give her brain a chance to rest and recover.

The use of hypothermia as a treatment in the case of brain injury, has been happening for several years.
It is fantastic that it can help such tiny babies as well as children and adults.

But I honestly don't think that the doctors are claiming that freezing a stillborn baby will make it come back to life Sad and the title really wasn't very clear about that.

coinoperatedgirl · 04/03/2011 01:08

Insensitive title, the baby wasn't dead, it was resuscitated, then cooled. I don't understand why this was in the news, seeing as this practice has been going for ages Hmm.

Plus I don't really think 9 months is adequate to assess the effects of hypoxia, issues may arise years later.

I wish Ella well though and hope she is unaffected.

gaelicsheep · 04/03/2011 20:58

Yes, but it was resuscitated for 25 mins before they got a faint heartbeat. The poor wee thing was to all intents and purposes dead. One wonders if they would have continued for so long without the promise of a treatment to avert the dreadful brain damage that would surely have been inevitable without it.
