Does every newspaper clearly support/endorse a particular political party, or are any of them neutral?

I don't read newspapers as such, but like to dip in and out of various news websites to keep up to date

I saw a comment on a thread the other day saying basically that all newspapers churn out propaganda based on which political party they support

Is this true? Which parties do each paper/group support? Are there any neutral ones?

As a general rule:

The Guardian : Centre Left ish
The Sun / News of the World: Right Wing
The Independent : centre ish
Daily Mail : Right Wing (or is that nazi?) Wink
Daily Telegraph : Right Wing
The Times : Centre Right
The Daily Mirror : Labour
Daily Express : Right-wing
The Observer : Centre Left
The Daily Star : Right-Wing

Personally I quite like the new i.

For neutrality - I'd recommend the FT. The editorials can be opinionated (though rarely burdened with the level of hyperbole found in the Mail or Guardian) but the news reporting tends to be impartial. You need to register to get it online.

I broadly agree with DrNortherner although, imo - newspapers are mixing it up at the moment. The Indy appears to be competing with the Guardian to be the most left wing. And the Daily Mail is joining the Guardian in its support of UKUncut.

I've found the Metro to be fairly impartial too.

It does piss me right off when so called reputable broadsheets like The Guardian are little more than the Daily Mirror. The only difference is the way the paper folds.

jackstarb · 23/02/2011 18:24

Niceguy2 - have you seen the grief the Guardian's been getting on Twitter?

pinkhebe · 23/02/2011 18:27

The Week is a good mag for catching up on all the weeks news, There are always, 3 issues free etc offers on

Niceguy2 · 23/02/2011 20:02

jackstarb I don't use Twitter but I've heard. Totally deserved in my opinion. Their piece on Barclays was so biased that it made the Daily Mail look like the voice of reason!

I think they've really shot themselves in the foot there and really think they should apologise for such gutter journalism and a promise never to repeat. But I guess that's just wishful thinking!

nancydrewfoundaclue · 23/02/2011 20:08

I don't think it is as simple as one paper one particular view.

The sun for example is IMO very rightwing but actively supported labour when they were in power.

JohannaM · 23/02/2011 20:24

Private Eye. It gives more information in one fortnightly edition than the rest of them manage in a month.

JohannaM · 23/02/2011 20:25

And it bows to no political party.

jackstarb · 23/02/2011 20:33

Yes Niceguy2 -

The Guardian's Barclays' article was torn apart by several bloggers. This was picked up by right wing blogger Guy Fawkes - who wrote a blog pointing out that the Guardian's parent company used similar tax and offshore investment tactics to Barclays. Cue a relentless Twitter campaign to get a statement from the Guardian. (The Campaign 'trended' which is a big deal in the Twittersphere).

A Guardian article published today seemed to imply (to me) that the Guardian's parent company's actions are fine as it's all in aid of keeping the Guardian solvent.Hmm.

A bit of a lefty dilemmaSmile?

Niceguy2 · 23/02/2011 22:29

Yes indeed. So I guess they are saying then that it's ok to dodge taxes as long as your intentions are noble?

I should try that. I'm overdrawn again this month and there's 1.5 weeks to payday. I'll tell the taxman some white lies. Am sure he won't mind. Surely he doesn't want me to be insolvent does he? Wink

weasle · 23/02/2011 22:49

i second the recommendation for The Week.It is fabulous. All the important stories, compact, unbiased, thoroughly brilliant.

And Private Eye, although that sometimes does make me a bit depressed with the corruption etc. But it's v funny too.

I always thought the Metro a bit right wing? It used to be a bit Daily Mail-lite? I don't read it much though these SAHM days!

DrNortherner · 23/02/2011 22:59

Yes The Sun switched allegiance when TB was in power, Rupert Murdoch liked him for some reason....

mayorquimby · 24/02/2011 11:48

"The Guardian : Centre Left ish"

surely far more left than "left-ish"

MadreInglese · 24/02/2011 13:11

Thanks all, some interesting info
