So I'm watching Ch 4 news. They're talking about the working poor etc and some people collecting food donations outside Waitrose come on. They're from an organisation called Food Bank. I have googled and can't find much.

Anyone enlighten me as to how I can get in touch with them, please?

Are you in London?
www.christchurchlondon.org.

They are normally attached to churchs..
Our local school do non uniform days and instead of taking money in they take tins of food in for the food bank.

Every year between oct and easter i buy extra tins each week then at easter get some little easter chocs and deliver it all to the local food bank, I am not religious at all but it does make me feel that i have made a small difference to someones life and wellbeing.
Sainsburys sometimes have a trolley at checkouts where you can but tins etc into.

What area are you in?

I first heard about them in this bbc article: www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-11427207 The Trussel Trust have them in various places across the UK it seems from this article.

I'm in Hertfordshire. Is it all church related then? Not that it matters but I'm just wondering about access for donors and those who need it.. .. .. .

I am in Milton Keynes...
Think they tend to be church based..

The one i go to i just turn up with my items and just hand it over. there has always been someone there i think they are open daytime hours for people to go to collect them. I could email the one i go to and ask if there is one near you.
Failing that Social Services hand out the vouchers to people in need and they need the voucher to go and collect the food parcel so Social Services may know your local one

WinkyWinkola · 16/02/2011 21:12

chocolatespiders, could you do that? Thank you.

A food bank is a great idea - especially if some of it can be distributed to beggars sitting on the street.

Apparently, Waitrose's bins are full at the end of each day with food that is just past its Best Before date, and I know people who get their food in that way. Wouldn't it be better, Waitrose, to put the food out the front, quite openly inviting people to help themselves, so that it's not so demeaning to go foraging in bins?

So everything's hunky-dory - until you realise how shameful it is that even people in full-time work can't earn enough to buy food...

Triggles · 18/02/2011 10:18

Unfortunately, the supermarkets can't do that. If someone were to eat that food and get ill, they could sue the supermarket, and they're not willing to take that risk.

IFeelSueLawley · 18/02/2011 13:21

The food banks can't give away out of date food either.

Mellowfruitfulness · 18/02/2011 16:12

Why don't they give the food away on the day that it becomes out of date?

oxocube · 24/02/2011 17:47

Winky, most food banks are church based but give to anyone in need regardless of religious beliefs (or lack of).
