Working parents have fat children

Mine are underweight, where am I going wrong? Perhaps it is the fact that despite working I still cook healthy meals and have a DH that can also cook. So much for stereotypes!

haven't read the article but a big fat Hmm anyway at the DM's working mother bashing AGAIN

BadgersPaws · 04/02/2011 12:30

I hate to defend the mail but....

The article does not say that "working parents have fat children", it claims that working parents are "more likely" to have overweight children.

So you having underweight children says absolutely nothing about the Mail's claim.

However that doesn't mean that I believe the Mail. I'd like to see the figures and I'd also like to really question why they're just picking on working mothers, why not working parents? Well to be honest I think I know why they're picking on the Mothers, it is the Mail after all.

Some working mothers have stay at home partners. Some women who do not work may not cook. I hate these surveys that continuously bash working women.

It's another one of those correlation stories - not to be confused with causation of course. On a slow news day statistics can be used to make all kinds of silly links. "People who watch Eastenders are three times more likely to eat cornflakes for breakfast" etc.

HumanBehaviour · 04/02/2011 16:03

They probably meant to say that working mothers who has partners who still won't do jack s**t at home have overweight children as they practically then end up with two jobs.

Ooopsadaisy · 04/02/2011 16:07

It's the Daily Mail. 'Nuf said.

Well, it's the DM and a US study, if you want to look at the situation in England, then better look at some English researchSmile

Having said that there is quite a lot known about the causation / correlation of childhood overweight / obesity:

Parent(s) being overweight / obese (if both are - unsurprisingly - the risk of the child being overweight increases). If I remember correctly there is also an extra link between mum being overweight with daughter becoming overweight;

Lack of physical activity & amount of time in screen based activity (watching TV / playing computer games);

The issue around working mothers rather than working parents is because mums usually take charge of shopping for food and cooking (I know it shouldn't be like that but it is in the majority of households). It's thought not just to be about ready meals rather than cooking from scratch but about mums wanting to maximise positive times and avoid conflict with their children when they are not working, so I understand they are thought to give them more treats (sweets / crisps etc.). Obviously this does not apply to all working mums, my DS was underweight as a teen despite eating us out of house and home.

Hilarious. The Daily Mail has also reported in the past that working mothers themselves are fitter and likely to be slimmer than SAHMs.

www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-386251/Working-mothers-fighting-fit.html

and there are tons of articles about the dangers of obesity in pregnancy.

So they've given me plenty of choice as to what guilt-inducing option to follow.

Working mothers who read the DM are 10 times more likely to be stressed out than those who don't.

Correlation, anyone?
