The Church Commission wants to sell the set of Zurbarán paintings from Auckland Castle, the official home of the Bishops of Durham.
These paintings were purchased by Bishop Trevor in 1756 and since then have hung together in the dining room of the castle, which he had extended specifically to house them.
These paintings are of national and international importance and are a symbol of religious tolerance, the original reason for Bishop Trevor's choice in buying them.
The Church must not be allowed to sell them in such a narrow-minded way.
