is the Guardian racist?

because I'm struggling to find a decent explanation for todays pages 2-3: massive spread on Australia (death toll 15); one column down the side on Brazil (death toll in the 100s, 1000s missing.)

I didn't call the Guardian racist. I asked if it was. And I credited most mners with the intelligence to realise what I was getting at.

Exactly chil: it is about timing and availability of material, combined with the rarity of the event in Australia.

"
of course the guardian is NOT racist? how can you even suggest that without mentioning biggoted publications like the sun, the daily mail, the star, the express and every other tabloid which tries to push its racial diatribe on us every single day! "

In fairness they push their own agenda as much as any other paper. They all do because it sells copies.

Rach - I raised it because I was angry about a specific page/story. I saw the Guardian today (as I do everyday) and felt angry to see such a stark differentiation. I came to the computer and typed my post immediately. just because I raised this question it doesn't mean I'm "ignorant" of the racism in the other papers you list. it's more of a reflection of the fact that I didn't see them today.

to respond by saying "of couse the guardian is NOT racist" (I assume the question mark was a typo?) is rather certain and simplistic. Is it really so unthinkable that snippets of racism lurk in corners where we don't expect them?

Vicar - I have been determindly ignoring compfan and will continue to do so.

btw - I (at least in part) accept the argument about timing

And your idea is very old. There was a tv sketch.. one British person #2 French#four Spanish#
100 Russians#planeload of guatamalans etc.

Wasn't the headline in the 'Press and Journal', based in Aberdeen, on the occasion of the Titanic sinking... "Aberdeen Man Drowned At Sea? (Hopes it isn't an urban myth!)

I wonder whether the coverage was because when the print version of the Guardian went to press they were only beginning to get reports through about Brazil, whereas they'd had time to send reporters out to Oz. It was the top story on the website as someone else said.

I've been wondering about the BBC in this context (racism). Their report on 'Today' this week was along the lines of 'Asian gang grooms girls'. Was it relevant that the gang was Asian (I'm talking about the news from Salford)? Would they have reported 'White gang grooms girls?' I don't know - it just made me wonder.
