unlimited bonuses and this crappy government can't / won't do anything about it.

I think I'll move my bank account to the bank who pays the lowest bonuses. Anyone care to join?

What is all this stuff about wanting RBS to ahve the best staff? It is the best staff who invested in dodgy mortgage backed securities and had not a clue what was in the tranches they were selling and buying all over the place. The 'Quants' as these geniuses are called, all with 1st class honours in higher mathematics, did not understand what they ahd created. You want to pay them megabucks and bonuses to destroy our economies? Madness.

that is one segment of a much bigger business advising companies on stock and bond sales, mergers and acquisitions, etc.
Most of that kind of structured credit business is long gone, along with the guys who were operating it.

I haven't read to the end of the thread, BUT the banks in question will be paying the money back, and on current forecasts at a huge profit to the government - probably one of the best trades the government has ever done! AND the City contributed £53 BILLION pounds to the Treasury in tax payments last financial year .. that is 11% of the entire country's tax income!! Can people not understand that financially hound these banks out of the UK, and that income goes with it .. hey, what the hell - I can relocate - do it and see how the UK suffers financially as a result!

People are just jealous because they didn't pick a job which gives them much pay, that's all.

The bailing out of the banks will be a good investment for the Government in several ways as stated above.

New Bank tax announced today

I like the new bank tax but it's a tiny, tiny proportion of what the banks owe us and the billions they are about to pay out in bonuses.

As for 'it's a good investment' - fgs, you wouldn't be expected to show gratitude to a mugger, would you? How nice of him that he promises he'll pay you back at some unspecified point in the future. Doesn't change the fact that he took your money under duress.
