One should look if there has been over the previous years a fair rate of acceptance accross all qualifying categories claiming for DLA. From the point of view of human rights, does anybody know of any research on the issue?.

siouxsienusude · 09/01/2011 19:14

Well this government is still THROWING child benefit and child tax credits at Couples on high incomes, the very people who dont need it.
That is why there is not enough money for those who realy need it like the disabled!

2shoes · 09/01/2011 19:49

and don't forget winter fuel allowance to people who don't even pay for heating

MissQue · 09/01/2011 20:34

Who is receiving winter fuel allowance and not paying for heating 2shoes?

DioneTheDiabolist · 09/01/2011 21:04

ExPat pensioners, who have moved from the UK to spend their retirement in warmer climates.

Niceguy2 · 09/01/2011 21:24

To talk about paying off debt is...bizarre. All lenders want debts to be serviced, no lenders want debts to be discharged.

Niceguy2 · 09/01/2011 21:25

Yeah, I've never quite got the logic of giving everyone winter fuel allowance without question.

Didn't Peter Stringfellow recently try to give his back on the principle that he didn't need it.

Don't think he got very far either.

Northernlurker · 09/01/2011 21:37

Does anybody know if these changes apply to DLA awarded under special rules (terminal illness)? My bil gets this now and I feel physically sick at the thought of my sister and bil trying to deal with any more crap, upheaval and set backs. I assume any changes would take a while - which it's sadly very unlikely that he would last for - but I'd still like to know.

It is beyond me how anybody can try to defend the actions of this government. Their attacks on the poor, the sick, the unlucky, the unfortunate, children, women - are breathtaking.

2shoes · 09/01/2011 21:39

a lot of people in sheltered accommodation, they don't pay the bills, but still get the allowance, my MIL knows some who have tried to return it, but no luck, they were told it was their entitlement!!

DioneTheDiabolist · 09/01/2011 23:52

Niceguy, what do you recommend the govt. do?

2shoes · 10/01/2011 11:07

I think this thread proves how little people care.
look at the posts and threads about EE a soap opera. mn hq getting involved, hundreds of posts. something like this which will ruil real lives..
zilch

poppyknot · 10/01/2011 12:44

I think part of the problem with this 2shoes has been the total lack of coverage in all sorts of media. So 'how little people care' is partly how little the media care. Sad and Angry

I first heard of it when looking here I think. Googling turned up a few articles (mostly in the Guardian) Couldn't find it on the BBC website although they did cover the recent story about the legality. There are lots of posts running on blogs but you have to be looking at them in the first place.

2shoes · 10/01/2011 12:46

it has been on the news, normally showing some one who will loose out badly, but very short.

GooseFatRoasties · 10/01/2011 12:49

agree about the media poppyknot. They only cover stories about benefits when it is a fraudster or someone with ten kids or someone living in a mansion paid for by HB.Gives people a very distorted view of claimants and allows the government to get away with this sort of thing.

donkeyderby · 10/01/2011 17:47

I spoke to a Director of an adult social care organisation today. This person said that the cutting of the Mobility component of DLA to residents of registered care homes is a disaster. They fund minibuses out of this and without them, they will find it difficult to take the residents out, especially the more severely disabled residents. 24-hour one-to-one staffing isn't generally available in care home settings, believe it or not.

She also said that the Independent Living Fund will continue but will now only be available to disabled people who work 16 hours a week or more. The ILF was used to top up the money the Local Authority paid for a person's care. Now the LA will have to foot the whole bill.....at a time when huge cuts are being imposed. And who has no voice and no influence over cuts? People with learning disabilities.

Very frightened of my future as my severely disabled teenager heads to adult services. Thanks Dave.

2shoes · 10/01/2011 21:09

dreadfull isn't it
they really don't realise the long term affects

gdmts1981 · 11/01/2011 00:17

The problem with the DLA and other benefits are the number of people who take the mick - without reform we continue to have to pay for these people which reduces the pot for those with genuine need.

Just leaving the benefits system untouched is not going to fix anything unfortunately

borderslass · 11/01/2011 00:31

I take it you've never tried filling in a DLA form because if you had you wouldn't be saying that.

OP posts:
MissQue · 11/01/2011 00:38

I have considered claiming DLA for health problems that I have, but after filling in the ones for DD, there's no way I could cope with the headfuck twice over!

2shoes, I think you are completely right about the media, the lack of care they show to genuine people is disgusting. No doubt if all the disabled folks in the country went down to London and smashed up Tory headquarters then there'd be an outcry Hmm

acumenin · 11/01/2011 07:48

gdmts1981, you are ignorant. The fraud rate of DLA is given as less than the DWP's own rate of administrative error.

Stop using me and others of "genuine need" as a shield to prosecute your hatred and ignorance. You're not making my life better because from this end, experientially, there's no way to distinguish me from the "scroungers". Everything you heap on their head, you heap on mine, even though me and my partner are A-Grade, Gold Star, Symbol of Deserving Crippos (young male quadritragiplegic and 24 hour sainted bloody carer).

You are why people throw things at my bloody wheelchair lift. Cite your sources or shut the hell up.

2shoes · 11/01/2011 08:25

here we go again......
no doubt we will now get the stupid storys about the man down the road who isn't really disabled you know.

having just renewed dd's DLA i can say it is bloody hard. it isn't a case of just filling in a form, you have to be able to back everything up. but of course there will always be some people who like to think making vulnerable people suffer is good if it stops this "fraud"

donkeyderby · 11/01/2011 09:13

I think all systems are open to abuse, but you simply can't penalise the genuine claimants in your efforts to weed out the piss-takers.

Overhauling the DLA system is one thing, but reducing everyone's DLA is not on. Recent studies have shown that families with disabled children are struggling to pay heating bills and going without food - it costs three times as much to bring up a severely disabled child as it does a non-disabled child and parents are often excluded from work for a number of reasons including lack of childcare and arduous night-caring. The ILF cuts and DLA mobility component to those in care homes are just monstrous.

Cuts to inheritence tax and high rate tax payers don't leave people impoverished, cold, housebound and hungry

droves · 11/01/2011 12:00

Sad . I dont think the goverment should cut DLA . Its a vunerable section of people who recieve it.

By all means ,they could even cut job seekers for adults who are long term unemployed with no good reason. But not the disabled.

DD4 gets dla because of her autism , and gdd,and hyper mobility.
Its used to help pay for....
her nappies ,
visual aids,
her special high calorie diet (because she has growth issues),
any extra equipment she needs ( like sn buggy ,
swimming lessons to strengthen her muscles. Little things like finger putty to help her mine motor skills.
And also for a special touch screen laptop for her too use in school because she has problems usng pencils.
Weighted blankets to help calm her when shes in meltdown, or to concentrate when at school/mealtimes.
Things you wouldnt even think about , like extra locks for doors/windows/cuboards. Alarms to tell if shes escaped /ran off.
Bumble bee dvds to help her learn basic words.
Rubber sheets for her bed / waterproof duvet.
Steps to help her reach sinks to wash at , to get in and out of bath ( because she is soo tiny).
Special booster seat for her to sit at dining table with family .
To pay for the extra heating she needs because she has trouble regulating her temperature because her body weight is so low.
To pay for the extra use (more than expected) use of the washing machine , and tumble dryer in winter because of leaked nappies.
If there is any left over , she might get treated to a sensory toy now and again , which helps her learn/stop chewing her clothes/calm down/ focus her attention/stops her breaking her glasses for something to do.

By all means my dd4 isnt the most severely disabled child. She only has autism/gdd/hypermobility syndrome/ and a growth disorder. She looks very thin , very very small but "normal" , very pretty actually .She wont get dla on renewal under these new rules. . .it will severely cut her quality of life .
It will also affect my other children because money we use to buy them clothing and footwear will have to be rationed to pay for dd4`s stuff. (dd4 is our last child btw)

I do think the gov needs to make cuts and savings toward the deficit/debts/general f* up. Dont understand why they dont just do a raise in income tax for everyone , sliding scale depending on earnings. More the income , more the tax increase ? (iykwim). And increase inheritance tax .

Does anyone know if the banks are paying back the money the gov gave them to bail out ?
They should be paying back once they get back into profits imo .

Having said all that , i would gladly pay back every penny of dd4`s dla if only someone could take away her autism.

donkeyderby · 11/01/2011 12:06

'You and Yours', 'we're all in this together'....just started on Radio 4. Discussing cuts and if cuts are to be made, who should be hit.

donkeyderby · 11/01/2011 13:10

And tomorrow on You and Yours (I think) a programme about the removal of the mobility component of DLA from adults in registered care homes. 12 o'clock
