Did anyone catch ITN lunchtime news about the damming letter re the police shooting of Jean, the Brazilian man?

I missed it but my sister phoned me. Did anyone here the full story? Sounds as if ITN have got hold of a letter Ian Blair wrote on the day the poor man was killed, showing that he was trying to cover it up and obstruct an independent investigation, as required by law - is this correct?

Apparently he also used the phrase 'shoot to kill' which is a bit of an admission given that in public he's been insisting it's 'shoot to kill to protect'.

I didn't see it edam, but I do very much care. I'll have a look on the Guardian website to see if there is anything about it.

dinosaur · 30/09/2005 14:46

No, nothing on there. Sorry edam. Have you looked on the BBC website?

dinosaur · 30/09/2005 14:47

Seems to be true going by the website here

edam · 30/09/2005 14:50

Sorry, sobernow, that's not what I meant at all. Just wanted to find out if anyone knew more about it.

Yes...mumsnet does move very fast these days...

jangly · 30/09/2005 14:51

sorry x posts!

edam · 30/09/2005 14:54

Thanks dino and jangly.

Sobernow, was only trying to bump as was falling out of active convos. Obviously phrased it badly. Have been full of flu for a fortnight and have injured my leg in a bizarre manner so feeling very odd and sorry for myself in pathetic woe is me manner. (Doc said if still have flu in a week may be glandular fever - WTF I'm not a teenager and I haven't snogged anyone recently, not even dh! And the injury is a typical runner's injury - I don't even run for the bus...).

I suspect that's going to lead to the end of Ian Blair's career. And until then I really did think he was one of the good guys.

Marina · 30/09/2005 15:27

Sorry edam meant to say sorry you have been so vilely ill. Maybe we need a Mnet convalescent home for you and Twig and MI.

tamum · 30/09/2005 15:28

Oh, I'm disappointed in him too, I also thought he was pretty good until all this. That's utterly shocking

Cam · 30/09/2005 15:53

I heard the next day after the shooting that IB had attempted to block the investigation but here we have the evidence.

I've just got one word for Mr B

Accountability

I wouldn't waste your sympathy on motherinferior, marina. I have it on good authority that she's planning to guzzle a bottle of champagne tonight...

...as am I, actually, but not with mi. Sadly.

Sorry, thread crash over.

Cam · 30/09/2005 17:37

What are y'all celebrating? Something we should know about............?

edam · 30/09/2005 19:20

Thanks Marina, that's very kind. Have been round to my mate's who, bless her, has fed and entertained ds (with the help and occasional hindrance of her two) and poured sherry down my throat. Feeling a LOT better.

But enough digression to my pathetic snivelling, what about Ian Blair? Does anyone think this will actually do for him?

Well you know what I think about the whole de Menezes affair edam- but I'm not sure (from the info on the ITN website) that the letter was so bad (given that he did think at the time he was dealing with a terrorist. I'm more interested in what happened once they found they had the wrong guy.

edam · 30/09/2005 21:06

Hi JJ, embarrassed to let you catch me moaning after last night's thread! I was trying not to post 'poor little me', honest...

The shoot to kill/protect policy is only ever going to be as safe as those employing it. In this case there seems to have been a monumental f**k up in communication. I'm talking only here about the policy, not what went on afterwards. I hold different views about that.

I still believe that we have the best police force in the world. If you are taken in for questioning, you can know that you and your family will not be tortured to provide information. No one set out that day to kill an innocent man. I can speak from different but sadly similar experience. I don't want to blah on about it, as I've said it before, but my son died from a complete f**k up in communication too. The authorities in our case also sought to 'cover up' whilst spouting on about having a 'full and frank' discussion about the events.

I believe that the shoot to kill policy is the right one. If the policy is stopped as a result of this tragic case, gun crime which is sadly an almost daily occurence (sp) will continue unchecked, as those wielding them will know that officers will not be able to stop them. I think it is important to remember that the shoot to kill policy is used more often against those carrying and using guns than the new spectres of suicide bombers.
