Story [[

I know this happens just about every day,not that it makes it any less tragic, but I knew, though not terribly well, one of the girls who died.

The picture of their belongings scattered across the road has haunted me all day.

It happened just round the corner from the street where I saw a woman struck by a bus a few years back, though she didn't die but was left with permanent impairment, and it's bringing back memories of that.

A friend witnessed the immediate aftermath.
I was going to go shopping with her today, but I'm glad I didn't now.

I can't imagine the pain their families are going through and will go through for the rest of their lives.

I hope the third pedestrian will pull through.

RIP Mhairi and Laura.Sad

This has upset me too - just the randomness of it all, and the thought that it could easily have been one of my DSs (or me!).

These poor families, saying goodbye to their daughters this morning, never imagining that they wouldn't come back.

I was also going to go into town today, but got caught up doing things locally.

It's tragic, but especially tragic at this time of year.

RIP

Witnesses say that the driver was speeding along that road. That's certainly not a road you can do that on,not that you should do it on any road, but with all those buses coming out of the station, and people crossing to get to the station and John Lewis?
Idiot doesn't even begin to cover it.

I can't stop thinking about their families being given the news.

I started a thread about this earlier. I saw it today, not it actually happening, but I got there just as the ambulances arrived and saw them working on the girls.

I haven't been able to get it out of my head all day.

RIP Sad

I have crossed this road at these lights hundreds of times- sends shivers down my spine. Poor girls and their poor families. So sad.

begonyabampot · 18/12/2010 09:44

So sad - poor families. The emergency services too - you wonder how they can cope with all the horrible stuff they have to deal with. Happened just round the corner from me a few years ago. Driver mounted pavement and killed a little boy and his dog - every day I drive by and can't help but think of him.

magimix · 18/12/2010 12:54

This happened to a relative of mine a few years ago, speeding car drove onto the pavement knocked her flying into the air, suffered horrendous injuries and died 1 week later. Driver only received a couple of months in jail, and banned for 3 years. Insurance company took years to sort out compensation which ended up being an insult to the her family. Insurance means nothing unless you are a high earner when death like this happens.
Those poor young girls, my stomach churned reading what happened to them, drivers who do this should banned for life and given harsher sentences otherwise there is no incentive to slow down for some people.

Unwind · 18/12/2010 16:09

I think there should be harsher punishments - but morons who drive too fast in busy areas, even in conditions like yesterday, are so arrogant that they don't believe that they will lose control.

IME 4x4 drivers are especially stupid about driving on ice.

TheCrackFox · 18/12/2010 16:16

Wouldn't surprise me if the driver had been drinking, especially at this time of the year.

Those poor girls and their poor families. I would also like to see far harsher punishments for these kind of "accidents".

It is tragic, some of the reports have made horrible reading, the poor girls and their families, and also the other man who was hit who is still in hospital, although thankfully doesn't seem to be too serious.

I read that it is suspected the driver had a heart attack at the wheel, but who knows, I imagine it is too soon to know just yet.

Unwind · 18/12/2010 16:36

A heart attack would not explain his speeding though? Witnesses estimated that he was travelling at about 60mph.

ElizabethWakefield · 18/12/2010 16:40

I thought that too. That is such a bad road to speed along (not that any road is good, but you know what I mean) with all the buses coming from the bus station. Especially when the conditions were not great.

Unwind · 18/12/2010 16:48

Yes, the news said he swerved suddenly to avoid a bus, and mounted the pavement at the pedestrian crossing.

There could be a medical explanation for his behaviour - but it would surely be neurological rather than a heart attack.

itsawonderfuldarleneconnorlife · 21/12/2010 12:45

I heard that they were suspecting he had some kind of seizure (sp?) but then he really shouldn't have been driving at all.

It was so random and tragic and at such a bad time of year for the families.

RIP Sad
