Mistyop - I think moderate Islam is a misnomer, just like moderate Christianity - it's just that the Islamic nutjobs get so much of the attention that everyone seems to think all Muslims want Sharia law all over the world (and Ssaudi-style sharia at that).
IMO (and I might be wrong) a moderate Muslim is someone who follows the Quran but does not take the hadiths as gospel (if you'll pardon the religiouis mix-up), who realises that there are people who do not share theit faith and respect that (if you read the Quran, you'll find that it does not condemn fellow 'People of the Book', i.e. Christians and even Jews) for having a different faith but advises peaceful coexistence instead. In short, moderate Islam is 'man-in-the-street' Islam - not interested in Jihad, just wanting to get on with life, respecting and being respectful of others. It's not uncommon at all, it just isn't newsworthy. By the same token, it's the Christian extremists who tend to make the news too, which is probably why the C of E is so bad at sticking together - all the nice, reasonable people just get on with their lives and chunter about all the fuss.

[Disclaimer - I am an atheist]

What's wrong with wearing trousers? In dcs school muslim girls insist on wearing leggings under their summer dresses. I am confused. What a bunch of fucking head cases to whip a woman for wearing trousers. I will never understand this shit in the name of a fucking religion.

MrsGuyOfChristmasBorn · 17/12/2010 20:23

I can't belive that in THIS COUNTRY, female genital mutilatuon is still carried out and the authorities turn a blind eye because it is 'cultural'.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 17/12/2010 20:30

BeenBeta's point was interesting - I know that the vast majority of Muslims are just as horrified as the rest of us by this type of thing, but I simply don't hear resounding condemnation from the global Muslim authorities. I'm not trying to be confrontational, and perhaps they do speak out, but perhaps they need to do more?

southeastastra · 17/12/2010 20:32

i'm genuinely worried about these sort of stories, have they alway happened and we're just finding out about them or are they new?

I am Muslim and know that this is wrong in so many ways, i dont even know where to start.

Firstly men are not supposed to stare at women, so these men should not be noticing and inspecting whats underneath a womans gown

Secondly they aren't even dressed islamically themselves, they are wearing tight trousers. Men must cover from between navel and knee in loose clothing. As far as i can see, they haven't even got a beard which is another islamic ruling for men. Men should have a beard. So how dare they do this when they cant even sort themselves out. And laughing! Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would sort these guys out i'm sure of it.

Also, there was an incident during the time of the Prophet where a woman fell off her donkey and her body wasnt exposed because she was wearing shalwar (baggy pants) underneath her gown. He said 3 times
" O Allah forgive the women of my Ummah (nation) who wear the shalwar. O you people, use the shalwar for it is the most concealing of garments and encourage your women with it when they go out."

There is one thing though, men are not allowed to wear mens womens clothing and vice versa so they are probably classing trousers as mens clothing, thats probably their excuse for doing this.

begonyabampot · 18/12/2010 20:29

i think most people would agree there is probably nothing religious in what they are doing. Just sadistic men with a bit of power - what a horrible and dangerous combination.

LittleMissHootsMon · 29/12/2010 00:30

Let's take the religious excuse for this abuse of a female out of it. Religion here is utterly irrelevant.

Beards, loose clothing, men not supposed to stare at a woman... I can't talk about Sudan, but NONE of that happens in moderate countries like Egypt, Sudan's Neighbour. As a female you are gawked at AND WORSE by many men. I have been followed, stalked and photographed. Other women I know have been harassed and surrounded and refused to be allowed to pass. During Ramadan too.

To quote the Egyptian Centre for Women's Rights "Some 70 percent of Egyptian women said they have been harassed or assaulted on their country?s streets, while 98 percent of foreign women said they experienced similar issues."

So religion has nothing to do with this behaviour.

Do we have a Sudanese embassy in this country, can we email and protest at that treatment of this poor woman and request that the officers seen beating her are investigated.

LittleMissHootsMon · 29/12/2010 00:40

I've just emailed the embassy here in London.

admin @ sudanembassy.co.uk if anyone else feels as strongly as they ought to....

CoteDAzur · 29/12/2010 14:49

Actually, Bible is quite clear that women should not be wearing trousers:

A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor a man wear women's clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this (Deuteronomy 22:5)

Quran's God says that he is the same deity as the one who sent Christianity, so it is not surprising that a strictly Muslim country finds that women wearing trousers are committing a crime.

Of course, whipping a person (man or woman) as a punishment for any crime is horrifying at this day and age.

ThisIsANiceCage · 29/12/2010 15:21

CoteDAzur So, erm, all those priests wearing frocks are in a bit of trouble, then...

I'm not being facetious. Your quote does not say "Women should not wear trousers." Your interpretation is based on your belief that trousers are men's clothing - a belief not shared by Jesus, the African preacher's great-grandparents or myself.

Women only started wearing trousers in the 19th century. So yes, it was "men's clothing".

I'm totally fine with loads of little commands from the Bible not being observed in today's world ("Suffer not a witch to live", for example). Islam will get there as well. They started out 600 years after Christianity and are at about the stage in their religion where Inquisition appeared within Christianity.

With a bit of luck and given today's communication, science, and access to information, hopefully their Enlightment will come before another six centuries.

ThisIsANiceCage · 29/12/2010 16:26

a) Women do not wear trousers, because this would contravene the Bible verse saying women must not wear men's clothing.

b) Trousers are defined as men's clothing, because women do not wear them.

You, however, are clearly wearing a bootstrap - as you are trying to pull yourself up by it.

CoteDAzur · 29/12/2010 16:37

As I said, women never wore trousers before the 19th century.

This has nothing to do with the circular logic you are using in your Straw Man.

Oh and you are not funny. Bootstrap. Ha ha Hmm

LittleMissHootsMon · 30/12/2010 00:43

If it's Gods Will that a group of laughing men can beat a woman with a leather whip, hitting her on the legs, and in her face then we need to BURN every bible, every Koran, every single holy book.

This is not right, never was, never will be.

CoteDAzur · 30/12/2010 14:12

Nobody here is saying that torture is God's will, but men claiming to serve God have tortured tens of thousands through history.

Inquisition, anyone?

I do feel it would be a good idea to burn all religious books, regardless, though.
