So who else thinks this is a bit of propaganda to decrease public support from students? It's London, there are so many possible routes but the driver HAD to drive into the thick of it?

It is waswondering

It's so disgusting that these protestors are so disrespectful and seemingly so blase about the UK's history. I BET they weren't history students. (probably chemistry)

I guess this is totally unrealistic... But I wish we could reduce the numbers that are accepted at University, by increasing the academic requirement for acceptance, but make it free for all who make the grade. Perhaps 'concours' style exams to get an interview? And if you aren't in the top % that year, even if you're super-rich and can afford to buy a new wing for the college (check the 'Sainsbury' wing in Oxford...Grin can't remember which college), you just don't get in.

i find it a bit strange that no-one at buck house hq thought to check the dates before agreeing to the royals attending the palladium event

I don't find that strange. It was the Royal Variety - of course they had to attend. And the Royals went about their business in London during the Blitz, they wouldn't put off attending something that they see as a duty (can't imagine they enjoy one of those awful shows!) just to protect themselves! Witnesses said that the route looked totally clear until two minutes after the car had turned into Regent Street.

Sorry GiddyPickly, x-posted!

Yes my Dad had one of those grants too! He came from very poor b/g and had been homeless for a while, and suffered malnutrition as a child (still can see slight twisting to his bones as a result). Then, because he was super-bright, he got in to for a professional degree which he didn't have to pay for, and was able to provide his kids with a very different childhood than the one he had. I guess that's why I'm biased towards that system.

I was once caught up in a riot. It was after a Stanley Cup (hockey) final. I'd been drinking heavily in a bar and was stumbling my way home when people around us (was with mates) started going crazy - smashing shop fronts, over-turning cars and setting fire to others, punching random people.

It was one of the most frightening things I've ever seen.

The crowd, including us, were tear gassed.

People here don't know they were born, tbh.

I dont think its a conspiracy and I think the 'students' 'thugs' whatever ... who attacked the car are mindless idiots.
There is a reason why this demo got out of hand. Maybe the police were heavy handed (and if they were they should be dealt with) but those who attacked the car and defaced memorials etc should go to prison.
there is a reason why these demos keep getting violent and it isnt the police.

I feel sorry for the genuine protesters though.

exlibdemvoter · 10/12/2010 14:36

The students need to paint the Police in as bad a light as possible. Anyone these days who mounts a ligitimate peaceful protest is kettled and attacked by Police - they then indiscriminately hit any of the protesters they can reach over the head with heavy battons.
This is a deliberate policy of the police to deter normal people from legitimate process.
The Police clearly need to be 'given a bloody nose' when they kettle people like this otherwise we (the public) will effectively loose the ability to get our voices heard.

If it was up to me, I would reduce student numbers to 25% of school leavers. However, this would up the unemployment figures hugely both with school leavers, and redundant university staff. I can see why the government do not want to do that.

I agree with Madsometimes re numbers. Not everyone needs to do a degree, away from home, incurring debts. There must be a better way of educating people post school.

I was caught up in some trouble in Jerusalem and tear gassed. Agree with expat, it's bloody terrifying.

And the royal variety would have been in their calendar long before this.

Having now seen the video footage,I must concur with whoever said it's more incompetence than a conspiracy. For the record it's never on to attack a vehicle, regardless of who the passengers are, as well as all the other criminal acts.

I still am against the huge increase in tuition fees though.

I don't think there is any conspiracy here -just a massively embarrassing cock-up for which someone will be being bollocked right now.

Anyone who seriously thinks the power-mongers would risk Charles and Camilla's safety and compromise their security for the sake of stirring up a bit of anti-demo feeling and point scoring against the students is a fool.

All it's done is highlight

a) how immature some students are

b) how woeful our security is. Good job it wasn't a bunch of aspiring terrorists with anti-British feelings.

FellatioNelson, I'm sure you're absolutely right. I know someone in the Protection Command of the Met Police and he was at the palace last night. Apparently Her Majesty saw it on the news and was furious! Heads will roll...

I've still got loads of sympathy for students

If you read their lips you would have seen:

camilla: "I told you to check the back door, did you check the back door?"

Charles: "No, you said 'I'm checking the back door'... "

Camilla: "No, you horse's ass, I said...."

It is rather suspect. Why that car, on that night, on that route. The car was designed for maximum exposure of the occupants. The windows were wound down, very strange. I would make sure my windows were firmly up driving into an angry mob.

it appears someone lowered her window on mistake.

she looks utterly petrified when it happens.

the event was planned months ago, as soon as last year's finished, for sure.
