I know it's tricky to get a buggy through a closed shop door but new research says shops can save 50% Shockof their total energy usage by closing the door when the heating's on. So that's 50% less carbon emissions too. Time we mums took action and started closing doors behind us? After all it's our kids who will inherit this earth. Big culprits are Next, Gap, French Connection, Monsoon, HMV, Vision Express, Body Shop, L'Occitane, Paperchase, Benetton, H&M etc, etc. There's a Facebook campaign you can join - Close the door www.facebook.com/pages/Close-the-door/128964107155996

But they are trying to entice you in, when you are cold and walking by an open door with warm air coming out, it's no different to the fresh bread smell to entice you into food shops.

It may well save money and energy, but how does it equate with lost revenue from passing trade.

I absolutely hate hot shops because I go out all muffled up into the cold, then as soon as you get into a hot shop you just feel so uncomfortable.

Our Sainsburys store doesn't seem to be heated and that's much nicer to shop in than our hot and stuffy Morrisons. Almost passed out the other day in there. Even ds2 complained of the heat in there and he always feels the cold.

Here's some more coverage on the issue. www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/nov/29/shop-doors-shut-save-energy
We don't leave our doors open at home when the heating's on so I don't get why shops think it's OK for them to do that. If the windows look enticing enough then why do you need to keep the door open? Marks and Spencers seems to manage OK with the door closed. Shops are currently so hot they are melting the snow outside their doors!! Confused

hmm maybe this is the one good reason there are indoor shopping malls

Meglet · 02/12/2010 13:34

I was fuming Angry about this when I walked through town yesterday. They all need automatic doors.

SoupDragon · 02/12/2010 13:34

oh yes, "Fuck the planet, what about the revenue??"

I think this puts the case very well. www.itv.com/anglia/money-and-energy-wasted63081/

Whoops - didn't quite understand the bump and reset - lost all the comments on the header. Ah well, learning. Lots of news this week on the Close the Door campaign. What do mums think? Here's what I put before: I know it's tricky to get a buggy through a closed shop door but new research says shops can save 50% of their total energy usage by closing the door when the heating's on. So that's 50% less carbon emissions too. Time we mums took action and started closing doors behind us? After all it's our kids who will inherit this earth.
