Have heard on news that hurricane Rita has gained strength to match that of Katrina.

Just wondering - is it the norm to have two hurricanes in such a short space of thime in the same region??

It is headed for Texas apparently, though could cahnge course and get New Orleans.

Why assume that it's because of global warming? This is a cycle that has been going on for nobody knows how long. It's been recorded for over 100years - hurricanes increase in strength and frequency over 15-20 years, and then decrease over a similar period, so the whole cycle takes 30-40 years.

Blame it more on the same sort of complacency as goes on here in the UK, where housing estates are built on flood-plains! "Oh, there hasn't been a flood here for 50 years, so it's safe to build here."

Expat....
Glad to hear your sister is getting out of there early, Traffic is already starting to get backed up on I 10 eastbound. No one wants to take any chances. Radar showing that we will be "feeling the effects" of the hurricane here. & have not had any recommended evacuations for our parish.

I will keep you sister & her family in my thoughts & prayers as well as the people of Galveston, Houston, & surrounding areas.

expatinscotland · 22/09/2005 12:13

Thanks, CeeTee. My folks back in Houston have boarded up and loaded up, but no plans for evacuation there, as the city is about 90ft. above sea level. It's always the tornadoes that storms like this spawn that are very worrying, particularly as this one is due to track north towards 'Tornado Alley'.

A cool front is expected today and tomorrow - well, cool for them at any rate! - and may decrease the force of the storm, but this could also have the adverse effect of improving tornado conditions.

The people are being evacuated by zone - you cannot leave until it is your zone's appointed time - in an effort to avoid panic flight and subsequent transportation chaos.

The state guard adn federal authorities are assisting local authorities in the process, and it has been made abundantly clear to all who refuse to obey hte mandatory evacuation cannot expect to be rescued during the storm, as even city officials are compelled to obey evacuation orders.

It's pretty scary, Expat. Right now while it is in the gulf we just dont know whether or not it will change its course.....for the past month it seems my television has been on cnn & the weather channel.

CeeTee · 23/09/2005 17:16

Expat, have you talked to your sister? Did she & her family get to their destination safely?

Pretty Candles - Global Warming isn't just a manmade phonomena. Your right this is a cycle which has been going on for hundreds of years - thats because we are living in the tail end of an ice age. Global warming is a part of the natural cyclical nature of our planet's make-up. It just happends that man made pollution has greatly accelerrated the rate of global warming - so yes there is a lot we could do to help decellerate the process. The US taking heed of this and resigning to the Kyoto treaty would be a good start!

I must admit I do like enviromental issues went
through a stage in life once even went green. I want Joshua to grow up in a safe place but it's not always the case.

stephone · 26/09/2005 20:16

Hi ceetee

sharklet · 26/09/2005 20:37

You don't have to go green to do a bit which if everyone did that little bit would make a huge impact. Recycling is a good place to start!

stephone · 26/09/2005 20:49

We recycle our Betterware & Avon Books down at the recyling point down town.

CeeTee · 27/09/2005 14:37

Hi Stephone.
We are ok. Just a bit of broken branches in the yard , a little power outage & no phone, but we are thankful. It could have been worse. Lake Charles & Cameron Parish had it really bad, & a couple of areas about 30 min from here got flooded. The kids are back in school today & DH has to go & fix up his shop @ work b/c the porch was blown off & a tree fell.
I've been working alot right after the storm, (we were the only store open) our internet was out for a while though.
Thanks Stephone! How are You & the family?
