Prince William gives Kate his Mum's engagement ring

He says it is to make him feel like his mother is part of the wedding which, under the circumstances is a completely understandable sentiment. Must have been awful for him to lose her at such a young age and difficult now to get married without her being there. Not sure I would fancy that ring if I were the soon to be Princess Catherine though, given the way Chas and Diana's marriage turned out.

That said, she was hardly in a position to knock it back I suppose.

ok, so maybe it symbolises a new beginning. for them (and the ring) happier times ahead maybe.

glass half full- unusual for me, but i think all the navel gazing over a ring is just plain weird.

NonVinaigretteRien · 16/11/2010 22:52

WRT to the Princess William business, I think she'll get a whole host of titles and they won't decide until the actual marriage what she's going to be known as.

As for Queen Catherine, it does sound a bit Divorced, Beheaded, Survived...

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 16/11/2010 22:52

PMSL though - I just read on the news he carried it around in the "Royal Rucksack" - WTF is one of those Grin

MmeLindt · 16/11/2010 22:56

I think it is sweet.

He adored his mother and wanted to pass on his mother's ring.

All this "bad luck" and "curse" clap trap.

I could say that about 80% of the engagement rings since the diamonds are likely mined in dangerous conditions by children.

LittleWhiteWolf · 16/11/2010 23:01

I think its sweet. I have both the wedding and engagement rings of my great-grandma. She didnt have the most perfect marriage, nor did she have the worst. For me its special as I feel that she's watching over my union with DH. Maybe Wills thinks the same--that its symbolic of having his dear mothers blessing?

Anyway, its just jewellry, it had nothing to do with the way C&Ds marriage went and wont have anything to do with W&Ks.

GetOrfMoiLand · 16/11/2010 23:21

I am normally Mrs Cynical-Cow of Miseryland, but I think this is all very sweet.

Bless them

(Sober, by the way)

I actually think I find it a bit creepy.

He didn´t want his mum to "miss out".

Also the ring is special to him & so is Kate so they should "be together".

Vomit inducing for me, sorry.

Can´t help thinking if a young girl posted that on here she´d be told to dump him & run!

ajandjjmum · 17/11/2010 09:00

I feel uncomfortable about the ring thing - but I suppose as long as they're happy. Loved the fact that he carted it around in his rucksack for a couple of weeks before proposing.

Thought she'd have been prepped better on how to answer the inevitable Diana question, she understandably seemed really awkward.

Hope they're happy.

ajandjjmum · 17/11/2010 09:02

Oh, and I'm old enough to remember conversations about the newly engaged Diana's title - she was to be Princess Charles or the Princess of Wales - not Princess Diana. But we all ignored that!!

RunawayChristmasTree · 17/11/2010 10:52

I think it is going to be a bit of a nightmare with security, working out who to invite and who to snub, hopefully it will bring in the tourist $$$.

phipps · 17/11/2010 16:40

It isn't a symbol of an unhappy marriage. It is a symbol of their engagement. I suspect William asked her if she would take the ring or prefer a new one.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 17/11/2010 19:39

Was it a happy engagement though? "Whatever love means" - hardly a ringing endorsement of Charles' enduring love for Diana. Regardless, I certainly wouldn't want to be wearing a ring with such sad connotations.

ISNT · 17/11/2010 19:50

I think it's nice. (Well if I'm pressed to an opinion Grin). He loved his mum, he loves her, it's nice.

Horrible ring though!

On the princess william thing - I was also a bit shocked to find out that with the children, any male children skip over their older sisters in the line to the crown. BAH!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 17/11/2010 20:01

Well, almost certainly if their firstborn is a girl the law of succession will be changed so that that won't happen. There was talk of doing that when Charles and Diana married but then they had two boys so no one bothered.

ISNT · 17/11/2010 20:11

Hooray!

diddl · 18/11/2010 08:15

I sometimes wonder if too much is made of that "whatever love means" comment.

I mean the way PC has been brought up, he wasn´t really likely to declare his undying love, was he?

Also, people were saying that Kate being almost 10yrs older than Diana was, she´ll cope better, & not be so easily pushed about.

And yet there she sat, wearing blue, & with Diana´s ring on.
Because PW didn´t want his mum to miss out.
