Why is it that there are so many tragic deaths in Bridgend?

here

I'm not sure how big/small a place it is, but I recall all the teen suicides that happened there a few years ago, and I am sure that I have heard of a few teen deaths inbetween.

I know it may be the media picking up on it, but I can't help thinking that it seems a very strange coincidence that these things keep happening.

I grew up in a town where there was a massacre, so I know how horrible it must be for those who live there.

this is one of the other incidents I was thinking of

EnSuite - I've often wondered the same. (Are you from Hungerford?)

EnSuiteShed · 27/10/2010 15:09

No, not Hungerford. It's bizarre isn't it.

Domestic Violence happens anywhere and everywhere: this story is newsworthy because the victim and offenders were so young.

peppapighastakenovermylife · 27/10/2010 15:10

I'm not sure. It's not a particularly rich area but I wouldn't say the poorest either - certainly not compared to local areas such as Merthyr. It is a fairly large area for a Welsh area but nothing on the size of the English counties I wouldn't have thought. Job wise, I would again say it wasn't the worst for unemployment either.

I wonder how much of this goes on in other areas but is not reported - so the media is hyping it up?

RoobyMurray · 27/10/2010 15:11

And because it's in Bridgend which has had previous news stories about it. Unfortunately these things happen everywhere but we don't notice or they aren't newsworthy enough to be reported in popular press.

DuelingFanjo · 27/10/2010 15:16

No idea RE the suicides but I do think the press made more of it than they should have.

I am quite annoyed by the fact that a 'friend' on facebook has already joined a couple of groups set up RE the recent murder of a schoolgirl. People get far too involved with things that have no emotional effect on their lives.

That's what I mean peppapig and RoobyMurray - are there more tragic deaths there, or are they just reported to us more? I think as well the size of the place is relevant. If these things had all been reported in London, no-one would bat an eyelid. I had assumed that Bridgend was relatively small, but perhaps I am wrong?

Completely agree re the Facebook groups etc.

When the killings happened where I lived, there were flowers and compensation and all sorts for the victims parents, which is lovely, but the year before, a boy at school had been killed in a car accident and no-one paid the least bit of attention to his parents because they hadn't been featured on the news Hmm.

Lots of the deaths weren't really in Bridgend but miles away - but after the first random cluster made the news, any that were within 50 miles got included, according to my annoyed friend who lives near there.

EnSuiteShed · 27/10/2010 15:32

Ah, I see notcitrus.

I really feel sorry for those who live there - even if they are not directly affected by the deaths, they will always live under the media cloud.

Wasn't there some sort of suicide cult there

scurryfunge · 27/10/2010 17:18

I think that was a myth put about but I don't think there was any truth in it, lerole.
