School Breakfast/After School Clubs cut?

On the news this morning it was mooted that breakfast/after school clubs are to be cut. I didn't think they were funded by the schools themselves anyway so WTF? As the news was live, I was amazed to see kids there at 7:30am. Is this normal? I must be out of touch.

i think Bumblelion@s post kid of proves the point that a lot of people see these clubs as child care, surely then if (I say if as I don't know)the money comes out of the education budget then that is wrong,

Janos, other agencies are too busy, the lack of staff and funding for the protection of children is a massive problem (far bigger then rubbish cereal) but, for the purposes of this thread, other agencies are not going to step in for a lack of breakfast provision when a child is presented dressed and ready for school and gets a good meal once a day (even if it is a school lunch - I use "good" loosly).

A friend of mine once worked in a school kitchen, she left when they told her they would no longer make mash from potato but from powder as it is more "time efficient". Frankly I feel feeding coco pops at breakfast is small fry compared to what is given to the children at lunch Sad

2shoes, afaik these clubs were always supposed to be childcare, wrap around care etc. I don't know where the money comes from but it certainly should not be an education thing I agree!

money came from extended schools didn't it? though they will probably get the push soon.

I presume the cuts will only be to the free/subsidised clubs - the majority are run by businesses or have charity status so will continue.

The free ones were a drain on resources, wrap around care should be for waorking parents who are happy to pay not free to those who have absolutely no need for it. Feeding a child breakfast is not dealing with the issue of a parent not providing - the money would be better spent on more social workers.

That's pretty much what I meant Bella, the school stepping in to provide a breakfast.

I find the sneery 'foods not nutritious enough' attitude of one or two posters a bit weird. Surely some food is better than none? And cereals might not be nutrutionally perfect but they aren't poison, ffs.
