Inquest into London bombings

I've had News 24 on in the background while working and they've been replaying some of the calls made on the day. It's heartbreaking listening to the early confusion and miscommunication but also bizarre how calm people sound - like they really didn't get (or didn't want to believe) that this might be a concerted attack.

I really feel for the families and victims going through the inquest and hope this will give them some answers....

I live in London and worked in Knightsbridge at the time. Walking home around 3.30 (we all left early) with no cars, buses and hardly any people on the streets, all there was was this most peculiar, eerie feeling in the air.

Chil1234 · 14/10/2010 11:59

The families of victims know the answers already, by and large. They know who did it, how it was done and why. They know that security services had their eye on one of the bombers but didn't think he was worth following up. We know there were problems with communications down on the tracks and that the response could have been better.

Many families think that raking it all up again 5 years on is a cruel exercise, not a helpful one. I'm tending to agree with them.

TethHearseEnd · 14/10/2010 12:15

I think many people who work with serious incidents on a daily basis such as the emergency services develop a 'black humour' or at least a way of handling situations calmly.

A lack of panic in a voice does not necessarily mean it is not being taken seriously- I agree there are other factors, but it seems unfair to blame poorly paid people who save lives for a living for not sounding shocked enough.

TethHearseEnd · 14/10/2010 12:16

Agree Chil1234- it seems like an exercise in apportioning blame to the wrong people.

I'm also not sure exactly what the inquest is intended to acheive. presumably they said what their aim was at the beginning but its not ben covered in the press.

I was on the tube on my way to Liverpool street/Aldgate when teh bombs went off. My esitmation was about 2 trains behind the ones which went off, probably would have been on the earlier train but I was running late that day.

Our offices were in Spitalfields and I spent the morning trying to locate staff who were unaccounted for and commicating with their families. We "found" the last missing person at about noon after an anxious morning. We were all very lucky that day.

Several of my friends haven't used the Tube since the bombings. I am always nervous on it these days. And I must say I look around the carriage to see whose on it. I think 7/7 changed people a lot in London. Or is it just me?

Kewcumber · 14/10/2010 19:15

Had no affect on me I was back on the tubes the next morning travelling to the same area that was bombed. There is still less chance of being killed/injured in a terrorist attack than the old chestnut crossing the road.

Tbh I don't know anyone who works in London who avoids the tube as a result of the bombings though I'm sure there must be some.

I was in the tube underneath Harrods when the bomb there went off in 1983 - I don't know if anyone else has been within close proximity of two terrorist attacks in London but you'd probably be better off avoiding me than the tube as I have nearly as bad a hit rate as the tube does!

I have also been held up at gunpoint coming out of an airport so on that basis I should be avoiding airports too!
