Why is emotional abuse of men downplayed as "nagging" and "henpecking"

Man cleared of murder because he was henpecked

Reading on other websites, it is stated that she emotionally abused him for years.

Why do they play it down as "nagging" and "henpecking" if it was emotional abuse.

I imagine because for centuries that's the way women have been depicted. As henpeckers and naggers.
Awful story by the way. Murder is never justified but I can understand why he had had enough of it.

I agree, Mme Lindt.

My DP's father is unbelievably henpecked. DP's mother is an appalling emotional blackmailer. The family was blind for years about what went on, despite tragic repercussions.

ElenorRigby · 08/10/2010 09:13

Well all men are abusers/potential abusers and all women victims.
...men cannot be emotionally abused as they quite simply don't have emotions like women, silly you.

MmeLindt · 08/10/2010 13:58

It seems to me that it downplays the effects of domestic (emotional) abuse while at the same time implying that she deserves what she got because she nagged him. Disturbing on many levels.

It's lazy journalism to stick with the cliched terms & stereotype characterisations rather than think up something different or more accurate. For similar reasons, you never see a scientist referred to as a 'boffin' outside of a red-top.

Describeded as "weak" by the judge

It's true, there is a vocab unique to tabloid headlines. You always read of "cops" being "rapped" rather than "police reprimanded", for example...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/10/2010 13:12

It's crap - I read about that case as well.

It's bad because it downplays the serious suffering he was undergoing, I read that she had beaten him up in the past. Since I support shorter sentences for women who fight back after years of abuse, I support that for men too of course.

But by labelling it as "nagging" it gives the idea that it's fine for you to kill your wife if she asks you to tidy the kitchen, or hassles you to eat more healthily.

Call it what it is FGS.

Elenor - it sounds like the old guard's stereotype of what men and women are is biting men on the arse for once. He can't have been "abused" can he? He is a chap.

i didn't realise that beating someone with a poker could be filed under 'henpecked'. obviously, though, he must have deserved to some extent, because he is, you know, 'unassertive'.
