Babywearing under threat in the US

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post; however this is a subject close to my heart and I want to highlight this issue any way I can:

Makers of slings such as ring slings and pouches are genuinely worried that this type of sling will soon be banned, affecting parent's choices and the maker's livelyhoods.
For more info, you can have a look at the carrier industry alliance f/b group www.facebook.com/#!/BabyCarrierIndustryAlliance

your link didn't work.

is the implied ban because of safety concerns?

paisleyleaf · 07/10/2010 21:47

I can't open that link and don't have facebook.
What's it about?
Is it to do with those 'bag' slings linked to suffocation?

belgina · 08/10/2010 21:35

Oh, I'll have to try and re-do my link. here BCIA link and another link that's a bit clearer than my ramblings
It started with the valid concerns regarding bag slings, but now this agency is also targetting safe types of slings such as pouches and ring slings and has asked a well respected sling manufacturer (who wishes to remain unnamed for legal reasons) to recall its slings without any evidence that their slings are unsafe. Sling manufacturers in the US are genuinely worried that this is the start of severe restrictions on slings and babywearing and are asking anyone who is interested to support them and share their own babywearing stories.
I hope my links make things a bit clearer for those of you who are interested :)

But neither of those links say who is trying to ban ring slings and why.

We need more information.

I know the NCT don't like them and you can't sell them at any NCT Nearly New Sale.

MrsKitty · 08/10/2010 21:48

MrsDepp - it's only the 'bag' style slings you can't sell at any NCT sales, as they have been proven to be unsafe. Other slings are fine.

Interested in hearing more about this potential ban (Who/Why etc). It doesn't surprise me TBH as so many people do not really understand slingwearing. When DD was little I carried her in a wrap sling and the breastfeeding counsellor at the BF group I was attending told me that I'd have to stop wearing it as they were being banned Hmm. Fortunately I'd recently read about the bag slings being banned and was able to educate her & the other HCP who was agreeing with her about the different types of slings available and what was & wasn't safe and why!

Unprune · 08/10/2010 21:49

Which type don't the NCT like?

Unprune · 08/10/2010 21:49

Damn, x-posts

I'd like to see the expression "babywearing" under threat. It's yuck.
