Gosh, I agree with Liz Jones

There is something that I don't think very often.

Sorry, I found this burger bar more offensive than a lapdancing club

I do notice that she mentions M&S and the LetGirlsBeGirls campaign but refrains from mentioning who brought the campaign to M&S.

Yes, it is highly likely that it would be the only job available! And the minimum wage element would make it better than benefits, with it being part time. FFS...are you really trying to carve out an argument for Hooters the brand? How about prostitution Mingg? That pays well? Or lapdancing? or do you have a moral line?

AbsofCroissant · 07/10/2010 11:44

I agree with Riven - don't attack the women who work there (though I never would, and would be very disappointed/upset if a female relative decided it was a good idea to work there). You should be angry at:

  • the men who think that this is an appropriate way to view women (as objects to be leered at, not people)
  • the fuckwits who think this is "family" entertainment
  • the douchebags who approved the licenses to open Hooters in Bristol and Nottingham.
PosieParker · 07/10/2010 11:50

But not the women that work there too? Why not? Why are they immune from scrutiny? They endorse and further these views?

AbsofCroissant · 07/10/2010 11:56

I don't see how making fun of their accents and calling them losers helps.

purits · 07/10/2010 11:57

I agree with Posie. The women have a moral responsibility too. The "would you rather work at Hooters or starve" question is irrelevent - there is always a non-Hooters-type job somewhere.

Mingg · 07/10/2010 12:06

I am glad you can be so sure and be so judgemental of other people and their choices

prozacfairy · 08/10/2010 07:25

Am I the only woman not bothered by places like this? What is the big deal anyway? If you don't like it, don't go. Hmm

TBH by taking the piss out of those who work in Hooters you sound very silly and maybe a tad bitter. After all Hooters employees aren't the only ones who get jobs based largely on their looks (models, promotions girl, pop stars to name a few).

Also it's a really low blow to rip it out of someone for how they talk.

nickschick · 08/10/2010 07:31

Kimberleys comment is excellent.

MmeLindt · 08/10/2010 07:32

Why are you attacking the women who work there, and I am puzzled by the insistance that they don't have family to support. How can you know that?

In the article Liz Jones talks about one of the waitresses being pregnant, so presumably she does have a family to support, or will have soon.

At the end of the day if the women were the ones profiteering from the business then it might be slightly less objectionable.

They are not. The management are the ones profiteering, the women are most likely on min wage.

Strange that they are being berated for working there, but if they were to stay at home and claim benefits they would be berated for that too.

For those interested - Channel 4 are showing the "Undercover Boss" - same as our "Back to the Floor" where the CEO of Hooters goes undercover in his own organisation. This Sunday at 9pm.

hmc · 08/10/2010 11:10

God - it is vile. I'm saddened

PosieParker · 08/10/2010 13:32

FFS....the women working there are students not 30 year old women with families. It was also noted that the woman who was pregnant was not showing yet, which implies that when she does her girl next door, non threatening demeanour will be compromised and she may not keep her job, I wonder what it says about that in her contract. I doubt very much that baby bumps fit into the mandatory uniform. I did not, btw, raise the issue of accents but am very happy to take the flak.

OP I am wondering why you posted this article if you are so supportive of these women, Liz Jones hardly sits in their supporter camps and she is definitely sneering at them and makes insinuation about working conditions.

As pointed out women don't have to work there and the ones that do have made poor choices, living in a society where women are viewed more and more by the shape and size of their bodies and not brains. Young women today confuse empowerment with sex appeal and whilst they may not be profiteering from Hooters, they do not have to work there.

Mingg · 08/10/2010 14:58

You seem to be extremely familiar with the type of women that work for Hooters Posie - women under 30 have families too you know

With regard to "there is always a non-Hooters-type job somewhere" sure there is, that's why there are so few people claiming benefits.

PosieParker · 08/10/2010 15:03

Mingg....You can read can't you? So have another look at the article with a cup of tea and a Biscuit, then if you could highlight the women pushing thirty with children, then have a look at the articles written about the young women approached in Bristol to work for Hooters. Seriously if you knew anything about the brand you wouldn't sound so silly.

Mingg · 08/10/2010 15:15

How about you have another look at the article yourself Posie. I believe it clearly states Kimberly to be 28 (pushing 30 I'd say) and Sarah 25. Nowehere does it state that neither has children or perhaps you with your excellent reading can highlight the bit where it does?

Re: the girls being approach in Bristol...that is not the only place where they have Hooters is it now so you absolutely cannot know why anyone chooses to work there.

I know quite a lot about Hooters as it happens and would rather sound "so silly" than as judgemental as you do.

PosieParker · 08/10/2010 15:21

I like being honest, we're all judgemental.

Mingg · 08/10/2010 15:26

I have no problem with people being honest but being honest and being judgemental are two different things.

PosieParker · 08/10/2010 15:33

Nope, all people are judgemental.

hmc · 08/10/2010 16:25

Well whatever...

Hooters is vile and tacky and it helps sets the cause of gender equality back about 30 years

Unprune · 08/10/2010 17:07

Let's not lose sight of the fact that a restaurant where women of a certain type are required to look and dress this way for their male clientele just isn't necessary.

I am fine with sitting back and saying, you know what, that is detrimental to women, the women know it, the men know it, the promoters bloody well know it for sure.

We could just not have it. There could be a restaurant on that site that could employ those same women and not require them to dress like that. They'd still have the job they need, and we'd all be better off.

It's not like the choice is female objectification or nothing. We could just you know, not objectify women. It's not such a radical idea.

Myleetlepony · 08/10/2010 18:44

I hate that phrase "sorry, but...". People always say it when they aren't sorry at all.
Grin

Iusedtodateahootersmanager · 08/10/2010 19:06

I know Hooters in Nottingham and actually used to date one of the Managers (so have name changed for obvious reasons), don't know if he is still there but he was a sleazy fucker and I also know the manager "Julian" quoted in the article. I still have friends now who used to work there.

When it first opened they recruited by going round the local nightclubs and looking for attractive girls, then asking them to come to interview.

As I say I knew some of the waitresses in there quite well and sometimes socialised there because of this. All the management were male, not one female member of management staff, make of that what you will. The wages were rubbish but the tips brilliant apparently.

It was a strange place really, some of the most attractive girls I ever met worked there and they mostly were proud to be there. Quite a lot of kudos in being a Hooters Girl in Nottingham.

To me it seemed a faintly abusive environment. Most of the girls seemed to act in a rather submissive way and the "Management" definitely had their "favourites". All rather creepy actually.

Iusedtodateahootersmanager · 08/10/2010 19:21

And Christ on a Bike if I haven't just looked on the website to find my ex still working there as well! 10 years later!
