I'm interested to see what you think.

They've issued an apology after a lot of complaints about

OP posts:
Francagoestohollywood · 05/10/2010 21:32

It's not very clever, but not offensive either, I think

claig · 05/10/2010 21:34

Amazing, I didn't know that all these blogs existed. Apparently the video of the advert has gone viral and the bloggers are laughing at the creators and explaining what it is all about.

whomovedmychocolate · 05/10/2010 21:42

Buy low energy light bulbs or we pollute the environment by spreading your entrails round a large area? Hmm

The economic argument for this stuff is much more interesting to a large percentage of the population. Say to someone 'in the future, if you continue to use energy like this, some penguins might die or your great great grandchildren might die' is much less compelling than 'do this instead and you'll save 30% off your electricity bill this year'

Why can't people get this? It's very simple. Compelling arguments have to be current instructive and active.

Negative arguments rarely succeed. Nor do vague ideas without a stated fact. This is why the HIV campaigns failed 'don't die of ignorance' wasn't instructive. '80% of heterosexual infections of HIV occurred within couples not wearing a condom last year, put one on and reduce your risk of infection by X % is much more compelling'.

Gah! Makes me want to go back to work to sort out this bloody rabble. Angry

" I watched it and thought it must be a satire on the very heavy guilt-tripping that 10:10 and other eco-emphasisers rely on so heavily."

Of course, the ``Franny, Lizzie, Eugenie and the whole 10:10 team'' are now trying to spin it that it was always intended as a satire on the public perception of them as hectoring and humourless. Yes, because pissing £400K of public money up the wall along with the involvement of some competent people in order to satirise the in-fighting in the environmental movement between idealos and realos is just what 10:10 were set up to do, and it isn't a load of post-hoc justification at all.

The amazing thing is that no-one, at any point in the process, said "hang on, this is both unfunny and counter-productive.'' Because when charities get public condemnation from Sony, they are just so fucked, and that they couldn't see it coming shows that they really are very stupid indeed.

Blu · 05/10/2010 21:48

CatInTheHat: Hmmm. But people do miss satire and irony.
In the CountingCatsInZanzibar blog the quote from Bob and Roberta Smith is not serious. (I know of this artist - he does things like mass advertise a funky sounding event in celebration of apathy, and then sends a follow-up e mail the day before saying it has been cancelled as none of the organisers could be bothered) Using his 'Quote' misses the point quite badly.

claig · 05/10/2010 21:49

whomovedmychocolate, you won't save money on your energy bill. The energy bills always go up, even if the price of oil falls. There is also a reason given, something to do with the distribution chain or the cost of refining or some such.

The low energy light bulbs contain mercury. If you accidentally smash one by dropping it on the floor, you face a huge environmental cleanup bill. A woman dropped one by accident and was told she had to call in a special environmental unit and the price was £2000.

They have to use shock tactic adverts otherwise their adverts would have no effect and nobody would believe them.

catinthehat2 · 05/10/2010 21:53

Assuming O2 mods haven't deleted it yet here's a very amusing thread with customers raging against the last commercial sponsor of 10:10

whomovedmychocolate · 05/10/2010 21:57

Claig - didn't say it was true, I said their way of promoting it was shit and wrong. Technically they have failed to create an inspirational marketing piece. Instead they have gone for a gorefest to make people talk, like this I guess (so that's at least one win). Unfortunately it's not going to inspire action, other than the turn over of a TV channel, which ironically does require energy!

tokyonambu · 05/10/2010 22:00

More to the point, the argument for low-energy light bulbs neglects the fact that for about six months of the year, people have their heating on in the evenings when it's dark, so the "waste" heat from the lights is heating the room. Reduce the rate of energy going into the room from lights by a few hundred watts, and the central heating (assuming a competent thermostat) will take up the slack. Hardly a saving.

FlyingInTheCLouds · 05/10/2010 22:03

\it was a bit dull imo.

Hardly offensive compared to some other ads.

I personally find Lelli Kelly more sickening.

whomovedmychocolate · 05/10/2010 22:05

at the o2 hoity toity customers Grin

claig · 05/10/2010 22:07

good point tokyonambu

It will be interesting to see what O2 does now that Sony has distanced themselves from this advert. Will they backtrack or will they brave it out?

tokyonambu · 05/10/2010 22:07

Fuller statement here/ They're clearly deeply scared now: compare their partners of a few days ago as seen in Google's cache with their partners today. Whoops, where did Kyocera and Eaga go?

claig · 05/10/2010 22:14

statement form 10:10 UK director

"We also issued a statement apologising but there has subsequently been quite a lot of negative comment, particularly on blogs"

Isn't the internet the best invention ever? Without the internet, there would be no bloggers, there would only be big media (one of the two media partners of 10:10 is the Guardian newspaper). Without bloggers there would be no fuss, "no pressure" as 10-10 jokingly say.

whomovedmychocolate · 05/10/2010 22:14

I really hate it when people do the 'I'm sorry I was sooo busy with my baby and that's why it all went tits up' - it's fucking insulting to other working mothers. Hmm

claig · 05/10/2010 22:24

"This media coverage for this film was not the kind of publicity we wanted for the cause of saving the climate, nor for 10:10"

the Gods were smiling on us, they made sure that the best laid plans of mice and men went awry

catinthehat2 · 05/10/2010 22:24

yeahbutnobut Blu...
BobnRob is quoted in the Guardian saying this stuff.
He clearly got out of bed that day and went down the Tate Mod, and got interviewed in a non ironic way as he quaffed VIP champagne no doubt.
HE could have just sent a text saying he cdn't be bothered.
"He said 10:10 was an "important political movement" and called for political action to enforce compliance with a 10% emissions cut." is the rest of teh Guardian quote. Ironic, or a twit, you decide.

claig · 05/10/2010 22:28

"If you have been in touch with us personally about the film, we will be replying to individual emails over the next few days. I?m sorry not to have emailed you about this more quickly - although I have followed developments closely, I?ve been working from home with a four-week-old baby."

I bet she has been following this closely, and she's not the only one at 10-10. They must all have been on damage limitation duty. This video has gone viral across the world, bloggers are having a field day. Thye'll have to eat serious humble pie to atone for their arrogance.

claig · 05/10/2010 22:35

Instead of reading propaganda scripts and tomes on climate change, they'll have to start reading Greek tragedy. Then they would know that the result of hubris to the Gods is nemesis.

catinthehat2 · 05/10/2010 22:36

The baby thing was pathetic and embarassing and...hilariously shameless.
Imagine a bloke going in with that kind of cobblers and expecting a free pass.
Shameless.

Marchpane · 05/10/2010 22:36

I just didn't get it. Didn't get how the message relates to the advert.

Found the gallons of spattered blood... incongruous?
