Should they be banned from burning the Koran, or is it a legitimate protest?

Not sure what to think..... hateful racists obviously but perhaps they have the right to protest?

It's a gesture of free speech and I would protest if it were banned... but it's also blatent stirring up Hatred by a small bunch of ignorant nincompoops and should be lamblasted (verbally) as such by all and sundry.

Unfortunately, video footage of it will be repeatedly re-broadcast by the extremists and portrayed as a mainstream American every day action -- basically it's a recruitment drive for Al Quaida.

I don't even like religion, btw!

TwoIfBySea · 08/09/2010 21:21

It is ironic he seems to be against religious extremism.

As Evelyn Beatrice Hall (not Voltaire who was the subject of the biography she was writing) once said "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Muslims could always show that they are superior by not reacting to it. If they do then they are proving his point to all his followers and they'll just keep at it. Books have been burned before and it has never worked. I'm sure the bible has been burned on many an occasion so this religious tit for tat goes on for millennia.

Thank God I'm an atheist.

Alambil · 08/09/2010 21:29

TIBS was that ending statement meant to be so ironic? Grin

TwoIfBySea · 08/09/2010 21:41

:o

mixedmamameansbusiness · 09/09/2010 15:39

Books shouldnt be burnt full stop.

And yes I think it should be banned. Mainly because the man sounds like a nut when you view his promotional footage on FB. What kind of Christian burns books, and a holy book at that and still calls himself a pastor.

And they have footage of a crucifix with a skull in it.

There will be backlash for this (also not right IMO) however then everyone will blame Muslims.

Abu Hamza rightly was brought to justice for inciting hate, what is different about this man?

mixedmamameansbusiness · 09/09/2010 15:40

And all the Sacred Books carry the same basic stories dont they? I stand corrected if this is not the case.

Also ditto .... book burning instantly reminds me of the Third Reich.

POFAKKEDDthechair · 09/09/2010 15:40

He is obviously an idiot and totally insignificant - the question is why is he getting international press? That is a sure-fire way to stir up hatred.

mixedmamameansbusiness · 09/09/2010 15:43

And I dont think he is a crap Christian I think he isnt a Christian.

POFAKKEDDthechair · 09/09/2010 15:49

Of course he isn't a Christian. Or at least he is practising directly against Christ's teachings. Why on earth is the stupid man getting so much publicity?

SiriusStar · 09/09/2010 16:01

Burning books Angry
Burning "special" books Angry
Christians burning books Angry

As a follower of Jesus, this makes me both sad and angry, that there are people who are not showing love and compassion, understanding or offering the hand of peace, but are shaking fists and stirring up dissention and in the name of Jesus. Sad
Our church has a "motto"
Love God
Love People
Serve the World.

I would encourage them to re read the parable of the Good Samaritan and have a little think about who their neighbours are.

scaryteacher · 09/09/2010 16:14

Whilst I agree he is a shit stirring idiot, this is anti-Islamic and therefore cannot be termed as racist, as Islam is a religion and not a race.

claig · 09/09/2010 18:17

I don't believe that it can't be stopped. I think a way could easily be found to stop it, rather than the President pleading with him. It is also significant that the world's media is giving this maximum oxygen of publicity, as opposed to ignoring it, in which case none of us would be any the wiser.

claig · 09/09/2010 18:21

POFAKKEDDthechair is right, why is this getting so much publicity? Why are the world's media fanning the flames and camping outside his door?

RamblingRosa · 09/09/2010 20:54

Burning any book (whether sacred or not) is sacrilege as far as I'm concerned.

Reminds me not only of the Nazis but of Franco too. It's about as oppressive a statement about free speech, liberty, education and anti-intellectualism that you can make.

I agree that giving the nutters publicity just makes it worse though.

Ripeberry · 09/09/2010 20:55

Why can't the local police get him locked up on some 'traffic' offence just before he does the deed.
At least it will get him off the streets and stop an international incident.

claig · 09/09/2010 21:00

exactly Ripeberry, why not? Makes you wonder.

nancy75 · 09/09/2010 21:02

why do they need to lock him up? Why can't people (including muslims) just see him for the nutter he is and ignore him?

Orangerie · 09/09/2010 21:07

The thing is that there are not so many "figures" in Islam, they don't keep icons or many symbols as you can find in Christianism, it is very much, I believe, about the Word.

I believe that burning the Koran equates to burning a crucifix, not a bible.

But perhaps I am totally wrong.

Ripeberry · 09/09/2010 21:13

Locking him up would be for his own good.
Problem is any 'nutter' muslims would still get inflammed by it.

Ho hum...lets just see what happens, or even better, just don't let us know at all then he won't get any publicity.

No-one turn up to film it!

claig · 09/09/2010 21:24

the fact that it has already got so much publicity and the President himself has been involved says to me that he will not be stopped and the media will give it full wind.

nancy75 · 09/09/2010 22:01

he's not doing it now, because they have agreed not to build the so called ground zero mosque

mayorquimby · 09/09/2010 22:14

don't think it should be banned.
It would be a pretty big point of contention for him or anyone who sympathises with him if in the USA it was legal to burn the countries flag but illegal to burn a book.
I think it's ignorant and simply put fucking stupid, but as I said if the burning of the American flag is allowed by the constitution then the burning of any book should be also

claig · 09/09/2010 22:17

good to hear that they have stopped it. It should never have received the publicity that it did. The publicity has already done half the job that he intended.

Saltatrix · 09/09/2010 22:20

Interesting that he wanted to burn the Koran what an ignorant idiot not to mention hypocritical.

nancy75 · 09/09/2010 22:21

i think this is going to run and run unfortunately. it seems that his aim was to stop the islamic centre in new york. in the interview he just gave he said they had agreed it would not be built, but all the news channels are now saying that there is no such agreement.
