Warning - this link is incredibly sad.

www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3127448/Thief-hurls-dog-40ft-to-death.html

I just don't understand why someone would do something like this. The poor dog and her poor owners. The dog was described as being the couples "chief interest" - that wanker has probably stolen the couples main reason for getting up in the morning. I hope he rots.

Agree absolutely Notalone. I am a dog lover and I actually got my eldely parents a Border Collie as my dad is still fit enough to walk a dog and it gets him out of the house. And you're right it does give them a reason to get up in the morning - having another being to care for/walk/feed etc etc. It also makes them feel safer in their own home - even though they live in a nice area. Dad always says 'that dog is a Godsend - I know they would be so isolated from society without him - he even sits and 'minds' mum for a few minutes while Dad goes to corner shop - never moves from her side till he comes back in.

That picture of the dog walking behind that monster so trusting is just haunting. I dont know either how anyone could do that - it seems we are the only species that kills for entertainment or out of cruelty. I only hope she died instantly and didnt lie there suffering and I wouldnt be surprised if one of that poor old couple didnt suddenly pass away from a heart attack or something in very near future - they must be literally heartbroken. Twenty six weeks eh ? killing an innocent animal and breaking two hearts - absolute bollocks.

Its horrendous isn't it Suda. I hope she died instantly too and really hope to god this doesn't result in something happenning to one or both of the elderly couple. Your parents border collie sounds lovely. I have a border collie too which we got from a rescue home last year. They are such gorgeous dogs - I just can't comprehend how this evil person could do such a thing. 26 weeks is a joke Sad

My mum and dads was a rescue as well - he was too old to re-home - he is 9 now but they often live to a ripe old age. So I now sometimes fret that I did wrong thing getting him an old dog as he may outlive him and he will be heartbroken etc (my dad more than mum as she's really not so aware these days ). But dad knows how old he is and he knew when he got him so he just says its ok we are two old dogs together ! But I got him as he was by far the gentlest temperament - he's not got a growl in him Smile

I think there should be a matching service for elderly people and elderly dogs. Seriously! I do volunteer dog walking for the rescue I got my border collie from and it is always the older dogs age 8+ that are usually overlooked. Also many elderly people assume they would not be allowed to adopt a dog whereas the rescue I work in has no upper age limit as they will always have the dog back. One elderly man came in last year and was in floods of tears when he was allowed to adopt an 8 year old staffy - his dog had died a few months before andhe had assumed he would never be allowed another dog because of his age. Sadly the dog died just months later of cancer but she was loved and spoiled right up unitil the end. The man didn't come back to adopt another elderly dog - I hope he is ok Sad

The relationship between your dad and his elderly dog friend sounds truly lovely and they probably do each other the world of good. They can live to around 15 so he probably has years ahead of him yet Smile

What an awful story - I agree 26 weeks hardly seems like enough, someone who can do such a thing for no reason at all must be completely devoid of any compassion and empathy, for both animals and people. I agree it's heartbreaking how trusting and eager to please some dogs are with people, they have no idea that anyone could mean them harm :(

Border Collies are wonderful dogs, aren't they, intelligent and lovely temperament, would probably have had one myself except that we live in the city with a small garden, and they tend to like lots of outdoor space to run around in.

I never leave my dog unattended outside shops etc though, because sadly there are people like this around, would encourage other dog owners not to leave theirs if they have any choice about it. With mine I worry some idiot might steal him to train as an aggressive 'status dog' because of his breed, not that he has an ounce of aggression in him, bless him.

You are so right ephiny - they are fantastic. mine was badly treated at some point so is a little bit neurotic sometimes and ball obsessed to the point of needing help Smile but he is wonderful.

Do you have a staffy? Another fantastic breed of dog and really misunderstood imo

We have a rottie actually, really sweet boy :) Agree staffies are great too, shame about how they're perceived.

Vallhala · 08/09/2010 22:45

No argument here, if anything your words are too polite OP. I hope that the c* rots in hell.

It's something I say a lot on here but rather that than hear of another tragic story - NEVER EVER leave your dog unattended, not even in your garden, which is where a great deal of thefts occur. Dog theft is rapidly increasing and as someone involved in many areas of rescue I get to hear of it daily.

It's not just young dogs or pedigrees which are stolen - theives don't care, they will steal your dog not just to sell but for breeding, fighting, bait for fighting dogs and to suddenly decide they have "found" a dog when a distraught owner advertises a reward.

The DogLost website is full of such dogs.

It's worth adding here that should anyone lose a dog, that website has a fantastic success rate and it's volunteers, readers and members are incredibly supportive and helpful. I'd recommend them as the first people to go for in order to obtain advice.

notalone · 09/09/2010 09:17

Aw - apart from the drool rotties are great too Smile

Oh no - seriously Vallhala? Bait for fighting dogs? That is horrific. My dog is always in our garden - he loves it out there. The fences are pretty high and the gate is always locked but it is v worrying. There are some evil people out there Sad Angry
