Such a sad story. Worse nightmare. God bless that poor lady now.

LouMacca · 27/07/2010 09:40

Tragic and heartbreaking. RIP Sonny x

Tragic, yes. But, given that quite a lot of us have tumble-driers at home, it would be useful to know how the poor child died. How easy is it to close the door from the inside? Are tumble-driers airtight when the door's shut?

PlumBumMum · 28/07/2010 00:12

Chil dh and I were discussing this , my tumble drier looks like a washing machine
I imagine the door would be very hard to close, and thyou can feel the air blowing in the vent, but MILs has a flat door with a rim inside would be very easy and is a condenser so maybe air tight.

Also it seems to be lost on the news dh heard it on radio and I googled when he told me

I read it lunch time and I thought I was going to be physically sick. So so sad.

Poor family.

I only saw this as it is a top news story on MSN when I logged in to check my emails. It is quite scary as they are not even saying if it was switched on or not.

One of DD's favourite things to do when I am washing up is to shout into the washing machine as it echoes and she can see her reflection like looking into the back of a spoon. There is no way she could fit inside and close the door though.

I have a new tumble dryer that I think would be impossible to close from the inside, its a condenser and is shiny flat metal inside the door. Also it has a manual dial and could be left 'on' with the door open. But I need to press another button, so that if it was accidentally closed it would not start up automatically.

MIL has an old one with a vent that goes out the back kitchen wall, the front has glass on the outside of the door but the inside is very much like a hairdryer, a fine mesh that can be removed in the middle and a plastic section with hundreds of holes in front that would be perfect for little fingers to pull shut.

It obviously won't help the family to have everyone know if he suffocated due to the small space, or it being air tight or because it was on and he overheated or was rumbled about inside, but I think other parents should be made aware so they can protect their own DC

CaptainKirksNipples · 28/07/2010 00:33

That was a long post sorry! I have been thinking about it all day, poor wee guy.

Monty100 · 28/07/2010 00:38

The poor mum had nipped to the shops I read and left two older dc's with him and they were playing hide and seek.

God only knows what happened.

Madascheese · 28/07/2010 21:02

It's hideous and I feel for the whole family.

I live close to the town and it is a really close knit community it's havng a huge effect throughout.

My thoughts and prayers are with them

Monty100 · 28/07/2010 21:47

Madcheese - me too .

God help them.

sailorsgal · 29/07/2010 09:50

Mother Arrested

Interesting new twist to this story.

violethill · 04/08/2010 15:30

Not surprised to read that, as I guess they have to investigate whether there was neglect. Impossible to know at this stage, though I am surprised at anyone who think it's ok to go off shopping leaving a 4 year old with older siblings/step siblings, unless they are a lot older and capable of dealing with various crises.

A 4 year old is just at the stage of being very fast, pretty dexterous, but without a lot of life skills or knowledge yet, so is potentially at quite a risky age.

trainsetter · 04/08/2010 15:31

How old were the children who were looking after the 4 year old?

Arrested for neglect .

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 04/08/2010 16:02

Only two weeks ago DD (1.2) climbed into the tumble dryer (she's a prolific climber). Luckily I caught her, she thought it was hilarious! She couldn't shut the door from the inside, and it doesn't start automatically if you shut the door. Still made my blood run cold when I read it. Poor family

CaptainKirksNipples · 05/08/2010 21:01

I think the first article had said the kids were aged 15-20 so not like she left a 6 year old in charge or anything.

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 05/08/2010 21:12

The arrest for neglect is not directly related to the incident, but apparently to the care received previously.
His siblings were adults.

Poor boy
