"Man with sign finds job"

I never presumed to, KM. Besides, you don't even live in the UK and well, the topic is about the UK economy.

But do carry on, it's not like you need prompting.

'And now my younger generations - my adult sons - haven't a hope in hell of buying, because the generation in the middle can't afford to sell at reasonable prices, and so my sons will have to face the hazards of private letting and potentially dodgy landlords...'

Have you seen the thread from a renter paying a landlord over £12,000/pa in rent and the LL harrasses her to forward post to her abroad at the tenant's expense?!

'I saw a programme once where a woman bought 7 flats in Leeds without even looking at them, or doing any research into rent etc. She was about to loose the lot.'

Was that the one who used to her divorce settlement to buy all those?

She'd never even visited all those flats!

Back to the 80s, when Thatcher cut everything.

In the UK.

Again, carry on.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 23/07/2010 20:19

Yes, I did! I feel lucky every day with my LLs, I'll tell you! (hoping to get DS1 into another of their properties at some point.)

If you can get them in with someone who has no mortgages on the places, OldLady, it would be a huge advantage.

So many threads on here from people getting turfed out again and again.

And more than a few whose BTL landlord has simply walked away and never even informed tenant that they were in danger of losing their home as a result.

Plus, of course, if they are on benefits and moved to JSA, their housing benefit will be slashed by 10% after one year.

southeastastra · 23/07/2010 20:27

unfortunately the neg equity and reposession things in the early 90s meant we could get on property ladder - lots of reposessions went v cheap

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 23/07/2010 20:28

DS2, his DP and their baby recently moved into private rented and I was so worried it was BTL; however, it seems to have been the home of an elderly relative of the landlord, so I'm hoping it's mortgage-free... though of course he could have re-mortgaged.

Fortunately, the house I rent is massive and big enough for all of them if it doesn't work out, though that's far from ideal. (They lived here before moving in together.)

TwoIfBySea · 23/07/2010 21:14

We'll need to expect this in the coming years after so much was frittered away by so few (and for those of us who didn't get the benefit of over inflated house profits or any of the rest of the crap that has us here today it is especially galling. Although having no debt is now meaning I can sleep at night which wouldn't happen if I had been a spendthrift now watching the apr rocket!)

Good on him I say, I hope his determination reaps rewards in his new job. Such a relief after story upon story about feckless unemployed scrounger types sitting with their hands constantly out begging. Bet there are tons like him, no I know there are tons like him.

notagrannyyet · 23/07/2010 21:32

Have they got anything left to sell?

North sea oil and gas are running out, and they shut the mines and sold gas, leccy & water last time.

Mortgage rates are bound to go up, and so is inflation.

DH will have to work until he's 70 to see DS through education......Yes I do know it was our choice to become older parents! He has a pension from private sector firm which will be worth naff all by the time he needs it.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 23/07/2010 22:41

Schools and hospitals spring to mind. Roads, too.

Ineedsomesleep · 24/07/2010 09:25

You're forgetting Magistrates' courts, think they will be on the list too.
