maggots in the wheelie bin- HELP!!

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 08/07/2010 20:48

Bin isn't being collected until Tuesday and is half full already.Just opened the lid and it's a maggot festival!
I had cleaned it out scrupulously last time it was emptied, (we're on fortnightly collection,) and virtually all food waste is in the food bin.

So what can I do, until it's emptied?
Anybody know any good maggot killing techniques?

It also pongs.
ps, thankfully all children very long past nappies

It was a good tip wasn't it? Smile Apparently, quite a range of insects etc dislike mints and flies dislike several types of garden herbs.

Might be a good idea to plant some in gardens for those people who seem to have a wider problem?

Last time we had maggots we just opened the bin lid and the birds came in and had a delicious treat.

OutToGetYou · 11/06/2016 01:29

Yes, I was going to say, open the lid, let the birds eat them. Or call a fisherman to collect them......

Fordy some councils can provide outside nappy bins we got one it is collected along with our normal waste, it's a lifesaver in our house lol

clarrrp · 11/06/2016 01:47

We aren't allowed to put food waste in our black/grey bin, but since you aren't allowed to put plastic bags in your brown bin it's inevitable that the food stuff you put in there will go a bit rancid especially in this heat. :(

try citronella - that'll keep the bloody flies away. it's amazing stuff.

Or failing that, vingegar.

Jeyes fluid is the best for this

Isn't it better to keep them and dispose them with the bin rubbish then to repel and let them go somewhere else, closer to your house? Brrrrr :( grosss

Goldengirl22 · 30/05/2017 10:13

We are closing this thread as it has been quite a while and the OP probably doesn't want this cropping back up.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/08/2022 21:15

That's ridiculous, they're only maggots. They will turn in to flies then just use fly spray in the bin not need for two bottles of bleach.

Zombie post

dementedma · 20/08/2022 21:18

Just leave them. They are dealing with your rubbish.

Nettie888 · 20/08/2022 21:51

When never had anything like this happen before I think I panicked when seeing the amount of them.

We had them once, before I moved. We were on fornightly collection too. Me and DH stood for ages doing boiling water etc in the bin. We then realised, they were actually everywhere. Our hole driveway was a huge mass of them covering the entire drive - litterally. It was dark and we were standing in them without even noticing. It was HORRIBLE. I have no idea why it happened, although it was a week that we used disposable nappies. Boiling water wasn't any good for us as there was just so many of them. I can still picture it now. They were crawling into my house and everything. We used about 10-20 kettles of water and although it did kill them, it didn't even dent the amount that were there.

In the end, it was a combo of fly killer, and some trays of beer, I think. Put them out on the floor so all the maggots were attracted to it and then they drowned.

I was motified and can still remember every detail now. Makes me feel sick just thinking of it. I have no idea how there were so many without us realising.

This actually happened to me too. It was the stuff of nightmares. they were all coming out the bin and thousands crawling up my drive towards my house. never being so freaked out in my life.
