Removing sticky patch marks?

I have a few child safety locks on various cupboards and drawers around the house. They are the sort that you stick on the outside and a plastic strip with holes in each end is pushed through to keep the door or draw shut when the toddler tries to open it.

I need some advice on how to remove the sticky marks that are left behind once you take the plastic discs off from cupboard doors. The sticky marks are the sort you get when you try to remove a sticky lable from something you have bought and it does not come clean off.

It looks horrible, any tips would be gratefully received.

I find white spirit shifts most sticky label marks. Paint remover for cleaning brushes after gloss painting would probably do the trick too, but you'd need to check that on a bit of surface that doesn't show first, to make sure it's not too strong and damage the surface.

Oh oH - arm streched very high in air - I know the answer to this one. WD40. Spray it on, stickiness comes off - like magic! Do I get a housepoint?

Well, thank you all for your replies, it is nice to get advice from other mums with experience of this.

I have jotted all of your methods of removing sticky stuff down and will proceed with caution as recommended by AMumInScotland and yes maria1665 you do get a housepoint and if it works a gold star!

Thank you all!
