Hi, I've had a quick search on previous threads but can't find anything to help! Our dd recently had a wee accident in our bed and it's left a stain and slight smell on our memory foam mattress. I initially used diluted washing up liquid solution on it and have aired it for a couple of days but it's still there Any suggestions to tackle it please? TIA

have you tried using lemon juice? I used this on a bed in a rented house when dd had a very rare accident- Basically put loads of lemon juice on it and then blasted it dry with a hairdryer
Think baking soda is also good but can;t recall how!

Will be keeping an eye on this as DD did the same at the weekend and it smells foul! Tried the dreaded febreeze but i think i made it worse as it smells rank now lol. I tried bicarb....didnt touch it lol.

thanks v much for your responses! am away at the moment but will give the lemon juice a go. Do you dilute it or use it neat?

I dissolved bicarb of soda in water and sprayed it on to the patch when ds1 wet the bed in a holiday cottage. It took a couple of goes and didn't get the mark out but did get rid of the smell.

If it's dried I think you'd have to completely re-wet the area in order to neutralise the smell.

What about getting a steam cleaner mummyormax? Either hire one or get someone in?

mousymouse · 13/08/2010 10:03

if the stain is dry, spray on water and sprinkle on bicarb of soda. rub in and when dry vacuum off.
if still we just sprinkle on bicarb and vacuum when dry.

Mummyofmax · 13/08/2010 11:50

thanks all,
i spoke to someone professional who said he would not be able to get inside the mattress which is probably where the odour is coming from. have borrowed a vax from my mother in law as a last resort. we normally use bed mats etc but it was the one time we didnt!!
more worried about the hygiene aspects of it all

ok so update!
Vax'ed the bed and smell seems to have gone!
still worried about the hygiene of it after reading something about cot deaths and new baby on the way. completely over the top i know...x

BrittanyBeers · 16/08/2010 22:17

Mummyofmax, try not to fret too much about the hygiene.Smile
As long as you're not smoking and drinking in bed a bit o' wee won't be too harmful I hope.
If your baby is anything like mine it will leak wee and puke in your bed every sodding day.

I use a paste of bicarb or ecover spray, then lots of air.
I'm fighting a loosing battle tbh.

Indaba · 17/08/2010 16:24

and you could always buy a mattress protector

BrittanyBeers · 17/08/2010 20:46

Oh yes!
I have those everywhere. Would cost me a fortune in matresses otherwise!

Mummyofmax · 17/08/2010 21:06

yes we have a mattress protector but it doesnt stop the mattress getting wet so we use those drynites mats too.
thanks brittanybeers, i only started to worry when i came across it after googling solutions!! xx

BrittanyBeers · 17/08/2010 21:16

No probs, mummy.
I have become a pre-emptive bed-stripping ninja.
I can whip the wet sheets and protector off a kingsize bed in 1/10th of a second.Grin

I avoid those dry-nights thingies in my bed because they're not suitable for under 1's. Plastic sheets can be dangerous because of their non-pourousness. (I made that word up I think.)

Mummyofmax · 18/08/2010 21:53

i didnt know that! how come they are dangerous? might cause a problem for me as i need them incase of my four year old but im sure when new baby is here we will all be in together some nights! x

Removing urine from a memory foam mattress can be challenging, but with the right approach, you can get rid of the stain and smell effectively. Here’s a detailed method to tackle it:

  1. Blot the Area: First, use paper towels or a clean cloth to blot up as much of the urine as possible. Avoid rubbing, as this can push the urine deeper into the mattress.
  2. Prepare a Cleaning Solution: Mix one part white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. Vinegar helps neutralize the odor and break down the urine.
  3. Spray the Solution: Generously spray the vinegar solution onto the stained area. Make sure the mattress is thoroughly dampened but not soaked. Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes to allow the vinegar to work on the stain and odor.
  4. Blot Again: Use a clean cloth to blot the area, removing the vinegar solution and the urine it has lifted. Press firmly to absorb as much moisture as possible.
  5. Apply Baking Soda: Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the treated area. Baking soda helps absorb any remaining moisture and neutralize odors.
  6. Hydrogen Peroxide Solution: In a separate spray bottle, mix 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide with 3 tablespoons of baking soda and a few drops of dish soap. Gently shake to mix. Spray this mixture over the baking soda on the mattress.
  7. Let It Sit: Allow the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide solution to sit and dry completely. This may take several hours or overnight, depending on the humidity and airflow in the room.
  8. Vacuum: Once the area is completely dry, vacuum up the baking soda residue. Use a brush attachment to ensure you remove all the baking soda particles.
  9. Check for Odors and Stains: If there’s still a slight odor or stain, you may need to repeat the process.
