Best type of rolling pin?

I've never had a proper one of these, always using the nearest bottle of wine! But I now feel 'grown -up' enough to have a real one, and wonder which type is best: wooden, ceramic, plastic etc? It's the kind of thing you only ever buy once and I'd like to get a nice one. Thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

depends on what you want to do.
my parents have a marble one, which is very heavy and stays very cold = brilliant for pastry
I have a wooden one with rolling handles which is great for yeasty dough. over the years the wood has become very smooth and now it is virtually non-stick.

I've got a marble one, good for pasrty, nice and cold

I did wonder if wooden ones would stick to stuff, as dd's ones stick to her playdough!

I think the silicon ones are really good - not sticky at all

you need to douse the wooden ones in sunflower oil before use (a lot so the wood soaks it all up). repeat once a week or before each use for some time and the wood will become very smooth.

I second the silicon one - had a wooden one which was a bit of a nightmare to clean and not nearly as non stick as silicon one.

i have a glass pyrex one

wooden one, just flour it and nothing sticks.
