Getting a curtain made for our front door tips please?

Hello,
We'd like to put a single curtain on our door to keep out draughts in winter. I'm hopelessly impractical with a sewing machine and when I priced curtains in John Lewis, they were extortionate! Any ideas on how to get this done on the cheap? Where to pick up material for a start?
Thanks

my neighbour gave us a velvet heavy lined curtain, which im sure you could get in a charity shop,i then threaed a ple through the top,and we put two cup hooks either end,and hooked it on,and i must say it did work..

Door curtains are cheap in Dunelms - they are a bit thinner than the old velvet type but better than nothing.

Velvet curtains on ebay don't get much during the summer, definitely worth a look. Come autumn, they start getting loads of money!

I had one made and it has interlining ( not sure what interlining actually is,but it feels like an old blanket stitched between the fabric and the lining)
It is a tapestry type material and hangs really well, and is very effective in winter in keeping out giraffes.

We recycled a long heavy curtain from a window. A kind of tapestry material. I am sure that you could buy something like that ready made which would be cheaper.

I've seen loads of velvet on e-bay. You could buy a used floor length curtain and chop up - bargin! You want a pole called Portiere/door rods against a normal track as this can be bulky and really depends on the space to the side of the door. www.tracksandpoles.com/rod_cat.shtml

Very simple to make. With a Portiere you could make a slot and thread it throu.

Interlining is fab makes the fabric look more luxurious, Its like a thin blanket bumf - they usually use it on silk curtains makes them have more body. I want to interline my bedroom curtains. I would recommend you did something similar or use a blackout lining as a thin lining wont do much.

Simple curtain making isnt difficult but get a book - I am generally self taught - Merrick & Day publish some excellent books well worth the money.

Lots of great ideas thanks.
I'll have a good search around.

I made my own. One bit of advice - make sure you can tie it far back enough from the doorway - my dd2 pulled the whole caboodle down when she ran over it with her wheelchair!
