How do I get rid of this, it looks disgusting!

Bleach!
Depending on where the mould is, and how much there is ,bleach will work if it can be left to soak for a good while. If it has gone past the point of no return then you will have to strip away the sealant and replace. Its quite a simple task -although messy. You just need to to get on with undisturbed ,
One hint is to fill the bath -so that it really heavy - when putting in new sealant as that helps to reduce the chance of cracking.

Dettol mould and mildre spray. COmes in a green bottle and really works. I do suspect that watered down bleach would do the same thing though

HurleySatOnMe · 12/06/2010 12:08

mildew

Shaz10 · 12/06/2010 12:10

I've bought some of that HG mould remover from Lakeland, I'll let you know how I go.

Before that I just redid the sealant - actually not as hard as it looks, top tip put liquid soap on your finger after you've applied the sealant it to smooth it out.

thighsmadeofcheddar · 12/06/2010 12:25

Domestos grot buster. Best of the bunch.

catinthehat2 · 12/06/2010 12:38

Same as Hurley, spray generously, shut door, ignore it, certainly don't wipe it off. |Then you can see whether or not the mildew is deeply ingrained.

schroeder · 12/06/2010 14:03

Another vote for HG mould remover. It is the business and great for grout too

AlaskaNebraska · 12/06/2010 14:04

dettol doesnt work for me

2old4thislark · 12/06/2010 14:50

big fan of detol mould and mildew spray - good for window frames too.

southeastastra · 12/06/2010 14:51

re-do it

Lovesdogsandcats · 12/06/2010 18:23

Thanks ladies, will try the dettol first, if no joy looks like a trip to lakeland

I second Domestos Grot Buster, it's a miracle worker.

HurleySatOnMe · 12/06/2010 18:39

With the dettol, I leave it on longer than the instructions say and everything comes up a treat

StealthPolarBear · 12/06/2010 18:44

agree with hurley - if that doesn't work it's under the sealant and the whole lot will need replacing
Alaska, can I come round and have a go? (I provide my own dettol). I have never known it fail, and have stayed in grim B&Bs where I've wished I'd taken it along

Shaz10 · 19/06/2010 22:15

I've just been using the HG mould remover and it's BRILLIANT - I didn't even need to scrub. I came back after half an hour and the black had all gone!

You must all go out and buy some now.

chixinthestix · 19/06/2010 22:33

no no no ... put a line of loo roll along the edge of the bath, then trickle bleach onto it and scrunch the wet loo roll against the sealant so that the loo roll goes wet and mushy and stays in contact with the sealant. Put it on before you go to bed, wash it off when you get up. Its fab and it works and it only costs a few p.

bibbitybobbityhat · 19/06/2010 22:55

I can't believe any of this is true. Surely by the time the sealant has actually gone black it just needs replacing?

Shaz10 · 19/06/2010 22:56

That's what I thought, and have changed the sealant before. But now I am converted and it's time for you too...

bibbitybobbityhat · 19/06/2010 23:01

Shaz - so you actually did your mould cleaning today then?

(Honestly, I used to have a life and was quite an interesting person with a full-on groovy career)

marriednotdead · 19/06/2010 23:15

Another vote for the Dettol here. Tried the bleach/tissue thing before but it was a pita trying to get the tissue to stick in certain corners.

Shaz10 · 20/06/2010 13:57

bibbitybobbityhat I am ashamed to say that I spent my Saturday evening spraying the mould on my bath sealant.

I used to have a very rock n roll lifestyle...

Bonsoir · 20/06/2010 16:00

I second the HG mould spray. Fabulous stuff.

vix206 · 14/08/2010 21:29

We just use basic toilet bleach, no faffing with tissue or anything you don't need that as long as you use the thick toilet bleach it stays on for hours. Then we just rinse off with the showerhead and everything is sparkling white :)
