yes - had them last year in the summer - when the bin men come and tip the bin into the lorry the mggots go aswell - the slide out

no maggots on returning to bin

YouMightKnowMe · 09/06/2010 19:30

Jeyes do disinfectant granules which you sprinkle in the bin about once a week...seems to sort it out.

Is it a wheelie bin? You need to make sure you shut it so the flies can't get in and lay eggs then you won't get them.

Bicarb of soda puts the buggers off as well. But actually maggots are no bad thing, they are very clean and just eat rubbish - unlike the flies that they turn into!

ronx · 09/06/2010 19:54

Oh god - I had them last year and I haven't recovered from the experience .

Haggisfish · 10/06/2010 23:16

we got them repeatedly last year, despite wrapping meat waste, keeping lid shut etc. Eventually, we gave up and just moved the bin well away from the house, so now they all go into the bin lorry or hatch before it arrives.

TheNextMrsDepp · 10/06/2010 23:24

Just hose 'em out of the empty bin and leave them for the birdies to eat!

No big deal, as far as I'm concerned, but our local paper was filled with outrage for months after we first got wheelie bins/fortnightly collections and a maggot plague swept through the county - you'd think people were finding toxic waste in their bins.

Jeyes granules for definate! They really help.

I freeze my food waste in a biodegradable bag (clearly labelled as such, obv!) and throw it out the night before collection.

Which reminds me, Friday tomorrow ...

DreamTeamGirl · 14/06/2010 23:40

for wheelie bins a really really quick solution if bin is empty is to empty a really full kettle full of boiling water in and close the lid fast. If you like even put a box or brick on top to hold it shut.

10 mins later tip bin over and dead, deep fried/ boiled maggots wash out and into drain.
Hurrah!!

Fruitysunshine · 14/06/2010 23:54

I hate the little critters. Every summer no matter what I do, no matter how much I follow the recycling policy they find a way back. barf

This year - I reckon I will beat them as I am buying a composter!!

Valpollicella · 15/06/2010 00:09

I hate the little fuckers more than most...due to the fact that one evening when I went to hang the washing out (barefoot) the upstairs neighbours bin bags had been sitting on their (fire escape style) outside staircase above our 'terrace' (I use the term loosely)

DP spotted the CARPET of maggots just outside out back door, just as I was about to step out.

App he had been fishing and had forgotten to put his 'fishing waste' into the bin when he got back (3 days previously)

Spent the rest of the evening throwing kettles of boiling water and bottles of bleach out of the window....
