Is there such a thing as garden furniture that doesn't look horrible after one winter?

Or do you have to cart it in and out every time you want to use it. Or cover it or something? Or just buy new every summer?

And anyone seen any naice stuff please?

hmmmmm me too I fancy one of the wicker sofa things to go outside but a modern type one.

Cover it! We live in the SW and it rains a lot. All year round. We bought a new table this year and have it properly covered with a green outdoor table cover. It still looks absolutely fine this spring.

not sure about wicker tbh, not very wipeable. I can picture rain grit filling every nook.

My parents have some cast iron/wood furniture. The iron gets painted every few years and the wood gets treated every year. It still looks as good as when it was bought and they've had it ten years now.

The parasol has a cover and gets brought in during the winter.

Measure the table and buy a size of cover that fits. There's a choice in places like B&Q and Homebase, or look on-line. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. We have a rectangular table so bought a rectangular one.

We have a set similar to this which gets left out in all weathers. After 4 years it still looks as good as new.

Royal Garden from John Lewis. Am sitting on it now. No maintenance at all and just needs a wipe to be dry enough to sit on after rain. I am in Scotland and it is wonderful for this climate. Best thing I ever bought.

Thanks for the suggestions all. Now I've started looking there's lots of metal type options aren't there?

Be careful what you are paying for with metal. Cheaper ones will rust and really should be covered or put away in the winter.
I have had the Royal Garden for nearly 10 years and it is as new. Even with all the cold weather this winter it did fine and I don't cover it.
Depends on your budget but if you are looking long term, I would suggest this. It's German, so the BMW of garden furniture. And buy it quickly as it will all sell out as soon as the sun comes out and stays out!

thingone - what do you cover yr chairs with? or do you put them in and out of yr shed?

DrSpechemin · 01/06/2010 12:57

You need to buy cast aluminium furniture - its a bit pricey but well worth spending the money - ours has been out for the last few years and still looks as good as new.

I'll avoid the Aldi stuff then! Definitely want something to last longer than our Woolworths set which looks like archeology after 3 years. Thanks
