So if you wash something in bio powder that it says not to, will it explode or something?

Got a new dress that I really like, but inexplicably it professes not to be compatible with biological washing powder

What's that about then??

the enzymes damage some fabrics e.g. silk and wool

overmydeadbody · 26/05/2010 08:16

think of biological as living, containing enzymes that can 'eat' the fabric.

i've been washing wool and silk in bio for years, never had anything bad happen to them.

i think its manufacturers(sp?) protcting their backs. my aunt worked in a garment factory where wool trousers were boiled, wrung and tumble dried then had dry clean only lables sewn in

colditz · 26/05/2010 08:32

It will die

I ruined a silk skirt once, it came out of the machine in rags. And the fabric had been eaten away.

bamboobutton · 26/05/2010 08:36

i hand wash mine, thats probably why i've never had anything ruined.

Just checked the label and it says 95% viscose, 5% elastane.

I'm sure I've washed viscose stuff in bio powder before

Thing is this is the first dress in a long time that I like that has fitted me, grrr.

Don't want to hand wash or have to buy a different sort of washing powder just for one dress though.

Bio powders can interfere with some fabric coatings.

Especially waterproof ones, as I've found to my cost.

veryconfusedandupset · 26/05/2010 14:11

Just buy a little bottle of Ecover Delicate wash or Tesco similar and wash the dress with a few other items the same sort of color.

Thanks all for the advice.

Am still dithering, especially as I've discovered a couple of other garments in my wardrobe are viscose and have been ruthlessly washed in evil bio, with apparently no ill effects (yet).

But my new dress is very swishy and swingy so I don't want it to go narsty... oh well will make the momentous decision just as I'm about to bung it in the machine probably!
