M&S sofa online - good idea?

loobs2 · 18/05/2010 12:33

Have searched everywhere for a blue small 2-seater sofa and only one I can find is on the M&S website. Has anyone bought a sofa from them online? Are they reliable? Are the pictures on the website true to the real thing?

We haven't bought a sofa, but have bought dining furniture from M&S online. Very good, although we had quite a wait from ordering until delivery.

However, we did go and see the furniture in the store first to see what we were getting.

We have M&S sofa's. Ordered them in the shop but they are very good quality.

PrimroseCrabapple · 18/05/2010 12:46

which one - have extensively tested m 7 s sofas recently.

Rockbird · 18/05/2010 12:47

I've just ordered sofas (not from M&S) and tbh I'd have found it very difficult to do having not seen them in the flesh. Even choosing a different colour to the one on display, which we did, is a bit unnerving.

potplant · 18/05/2010 12:49

We bought 2 M&S sofas inthe shop about 10 years ago and they are still going strong.

I'm not sure I could buy a sofa online though - I need to see it to know if I like it.

Hi PrimroseCrabapple - it's called Rosina compact 2-seater; also looking at one called Abbey

abbey is v comfy indeed, rosina still comfy but not as lush - obv price difference.

Which fabric - strokes samples...?

PrimroseCrabapple · 18/05/2010 13:09

Fenton also available in compact two seater and also very comfy.

my current top two are abbey and fenton because i need a smallish two seater for the width of the room.

ruddynorah · 18/05/2010 13:21

i'm an m&s homeware manager currently on maternity leave.

the only problem with buying online is choosing the fabric as you can't see or feel it obviously. i find customers will tend to travel to a big store to get a good look at the pieces, then go home to think it over before making the final decision and buying online.

if i were you i'd at least get some fabric swatches sent out to you before you buy.

loobs2 · 18/05/2010 13:27

Got the fabric swatches - nice blue shades incredibly hard to find but quite like look of calera texture turquoise and alto organic navy - unfortunately can't get the Rosina sofa in the navy, though!Am favouring Rosina as it matches best our other sofa in the room in terms of style.

agree re blue hard to find.

Rosina is nice i thought very comfy for the price, similar in squishiness to karlstad in ikea if that helps?

loobs2 · 18/05/2010 13:35

To be honest I'm making style/appearance and size the priority over comfort as it's kind of an extra rather then our main sofa. And the Rosina is literally hundreds cheaper than the other sofas - ruddynorah do you know the one we're talking about?

a good friend as a blue sofa from M&S... he must have had it at least 5 years now, maybe older?

it is fab, really confy and still looks practically new!!!

ruddynorah · 18/05/2010 13:47

yes rosina is the 'oustanding value' one. it's m&s's basic sofa. nice simple shape. nothing to dislike about it really.

it is just as it is on the website.

it's a firm sofa, not a plump squishy one. and the seat is quite low IYSWIM. the measuremnets will be on the website.

if you're happy with the swatches you have then go for it.

PrimroseCrabapple · 18/05/2010 13:49

ikea?

2 seaters

loobs2 · 18/05/2010 13:51

Many thanks all you lovely helpful Mumsnetters!

ruddynorah · 18/05/2010 13:52

i'm not just saying this (honest! ) but that ikea one will look raggedy after a couple of years. the m&s one will last years. i had ikea sofas in my first house. ikea is great for some things, but not sofas imvho.

loobs2 · 18/05/2010 13:54

I agree with you on that one ruddynorah.

I'm sitting on an M&S Abbey sofa right now

It's lovely, we've had the ones in the lounge about 4 years and look and feel as good as new. They are 2 seaters which comfortably sit 3 adults or me, dh and 2 ds's if they don't wriggle too much.

PrimroseCrabapple · 18/05/2010 13:59

hmmmmm, it's the swappable fabrics that appeal to me, have a low boredom threshold...

Although i reckon that rosina one looks fine for knocking up extra covers for, nice simple lines.

loobs2 · 18/05/2010 14:21

Am currently totally ignoring the fact that DH will probably come home tonight and say he hates ALL the swatches!!! And he did hate the look of the turquoise on the website, though I think the swatch looks quite different.(He does like the sofas though).

PrimroseCrabapple · 18/05/2010 14:23

its a strong teal in the flesh i thought, very nice and feels lovely.

PrimroseCrabapple · 18/05/2010 14:24

forgot to say - there was a sofa made up in the turq n my m & s.

loobs2 · 18/05/2010 15:05

Is the turquoise a bit too bright did you think?

OP posts:
PrimroseCrabapple · 18/05/2010 16:15

not bright - a strong teal i would say.
