Washing white clothes

DP is a chef so his white chef jackets get filthy but I can't for the life of me get them clean!

For white baby clothes I used to use a mixture of bleach and malt vinegar and that got rid of any stains even orange baby food ones but DP said using bleach turns his jackets yellow so I don't really want to try it and ruin them.

Does anyone know of anything I could try?

err - you do know that mixing bleach and vinegar creates chlorine gas??

i found out by accident - decided to add some bleach to my mop bucket containing a mix of vinegar and water.....cue noxious fumes. a quick google and i discovered i had created chlorine gas.

have you tried washing soda crystals added to the wash? great for removing greasy stains.

I've always found with nappies that drying them outside in the sun is enough to keep them strain free.
Many other people add bicarbonate of soda to the wash for perfect whites.

Oh I didn't know that! I only ever used a drop of each but even then I thought the fumes were quite strong. I won't be using that again even if it does get the stains out!

I will look out for soda crystals too, thanks.

napisan is quite good too especially if you can soak them for a while but yes sunlight is the very best.

Thanks for the replies. I will try napisan too. DP usually just soaks them in fairy I think hence the stains.

If you've got a baby, I would suggest soaking them in a solution of Milton fluid. I always used this for the orangey food stains in the dds' nappies [smile}

I use Vanish and soda crystals as well as detergent, and use the "stains" cycle on the machine at 40, then line dry, shifts most stains.
