Homemade Oven Cleaner

Is it possible to make a decent homemade oven cleaner from usual homely bits? I've just moved into communal housing and we tackled the fridges today but I'm sorting out the ovens tomorrow or Tuesday and need either a good oven cleaner that's cheap or to make one from scratch, help please?

I've used the baking soda, sprayed with water and left overnight trick. It does seem to work at least as well as mr muscle or similar oven cleaners, but you still need to use some elbow grease (and it's tricky on the sides and upper surface of the oven).

I've never done it on a REALLY bad oven though...

Thanks I wanted to use baking soda but couldn't get hold of any. I tried pure lemon juice which was diluted, bleach, dish soap and warm water. It worked somewhat but took a lot of scrubbing! After I'd done it my boss came to the house saying that he'd managed to organise for us to get a load of cleaning products on the company and they're being delievered later this week

Ammonia is the way to go with ovens. Take it to pieces, put in strong black bin liners, pour the ammonia on a sponge and put it in the bin liner, then seal up and leave for a day.

Oven pride does the same thing! Fab stuff.

If your oven is really, really dirty and this won't budge anything, try adding vinegar into the mixture (for a max of 30 minutes) but please check if this is harmful to your particular oven (when mixed with bicarb.)
