Help - smelly house

Sonnet · 06/05/2010 12:22

I have just come home - opened the kitchen door to be greeted by last nights cooking smells - stale food not a specific dish - my nose has also detected the smell throughout the rest of the house

How do I get rid of this but more importantly how do I stop it happening inthe first place - anyone got any good tips please.......

I am out agian now until 4.30 so I bet it will be worse on my return
It makes the house feel really dirty and scuddy when I know it isn't....

We are trying to sell atm. And having been assured on here that pet's smell quite strongly to pet-free people I thought I ought to do something about it. Leaving windows open helps, but I also bought some Price's scented candles - the ones designed to combat pet smells specifically, but they also do some for cooking smells ,tobacco etc. They smell lovely but not strong.

Open the windows during cooking

Make sure the kitchen bin is emptied every night before bed

Make sure all pots and pans are washed after each meal

nannyl · 06/05/2010 13:16

yes open windows / close kitchen doors

empty bin and wash up!

i have yankee candles...my fave smells of coffee and it helps to get rid of cooking smells, but i do think that open an window, with windows open elsewhere downstairs help to give a good air change if you can catch a bit of a through wind!

Cooker hood?

SleepingLion · 06/05/2010 13:49

I would second Orm's suggestion of Price's candles - we use the 'pet smells' one too and they are so effective we buy in bulk from Waitrose/John Lewis whenever we go there

same here .Dh was cooking sausages last night and when i got up this morning the whole house smelled horrible. I had to mop all the floors with a mixture of Zoflora and bleach but once that smell dispersed its all fresh again but i hate it when its smelly i alqays have the windows open during the day and the back door if poss< loves fresh air>

I asked this question here once and someone said burn some toast, as the carbon neutralises the smell.

Sonilaa · 06/05/2010 15:36

wash up promptly and open the windows as often as possible. nappy bin type bin helps as well...

Sonnet · 06/05/2010 16:47

Just got back - smell still as strong - I don't understand it because I always open the windows regularly when I am at home, always wash up straight away, wipe down tops etc abd bin is tiny and if I put waste food into it I empty it out...(although we did eat late last night)

I deep cleaned kitchen 2 weks ago and changed cooker hoods - I am wondering if it is in the fabrics - kitchen blind/curtins etc.

i have windowns and doors open to create a draft now

I love yankee candles and have not had any for a few weeks - hmm I wonder....I have a prices one for cooking odour - will try that later
thank -you all - will also try taost thing and let yu all know

I wipe down the radiators with a bit of fabric softener on a cloth so that when they warm up you get a nice smell.

SugarSkyHigh · 08/05/2010 20:52

How about getting the carpets cleaned? they can trap smells. likewise curtains, soft furnishings etc.

Sonnet · 13/05/2010 14:11

Update for all you who helped...

I washed all "linen" in the kitchen/breakfast room - blinds, cushins etc.

I cleaned out extractor (although only done a short while ago)

I ditched the 15 vyear old toaster - which gave off a real stale food smell when used

I aired the house (again I do this regularly)
and invested in Prices chefs candle for the kitchen.

All is fresh now
and so far all fresh!!
