it has been months too long since it had a proper clean. i tried oven pride about 2 months ago and it left a residue that no amount of rinsing would take off.

so i'm doing it today, what do i use?

I used a Mr Muscle concotion a while back. Totally useless & strangely a week later the oven seemed to be twice as dirty.

i'll be watching this post

phone an oven cleaning company

BallpointPen · 04/05/2010 14:16

Oven pride is supposed to be the dog's proverbials. Have bought some but not yet been able to bring myself to use it.

Ripeberry · 04/05/2010 14:18

Get a company to do it! I tried 'Oven pride' It works well, but leaves a disgusting mess behind which is more bother to clean up than doing the actual cleaning.

thisisyesterday · 04/05/2010 14:20

triple, that's what i came to suggest! lol

booyhoo · 04/05/2010 14:44

sadly, the budget wouldn't stretch to getting an oven cleaning company.

i have sprayed a mixture of star drops, white vinegar and water round it and will leave it for half an hour to see if that loosens any of the grime.

The one from lakeland plastics in the best one I've found - oven mate. Had no luck withe Mr Muscle or Oven Pride , but I would give Oven Mate 8 out of ten.

Am taking note - oven has not been cleaned for a long time . We are moving soon and so do need to clean it.

didgeridoo · 04/05/2010 18:54

If you are prepared to put up with the rank smell, ammonia is good for loosening the grime. Just pour some into a bowl & leave it overnight in the bottom of the oven with the door firmly closed. The fumes cause the grime to loosen & it's much easier to wipe off. Be prepared to start cleaning as soon as you get up coz you probably won't be able to put up with the stench any longer! For more concentrated cleaning of the shelves, pour a few tablespoons of ammonia into a black bin bag, put the shelves inside, tie up tightly & leave outside/garage/shed overnight. Happy scrubbing

thanks didgeridoo.

where would i get ammonia?

the vinegar/stardrops mix worked quite well so it is done now but it would be good to have the ammonia for future. i have an arm and hammer book that suggests ammonia for lots of tasks.

I got mine from a local hardware store. I have seen it in discount stores as well. It cost about £2 in the hardware store. You can dilute ammonia for general cleaning but it needs to be used neat on the oven.

blackmilkofdaybreak · 05/05/2010 18:01

Brillo pads - mil bought them and I was going to sling them out but thought I'd give the oven a quick go and, holy cow, she is right.

booyhoo · 05/05/2010 21:28

thanks black never thought of those before.

Soda crystals mixed into a paste worked well for me. Leave for a while (depending on level of grime) and wipe away.
