shelves in larder

i have a small larder, which hopefully will be getting some shelving put in soon, to help me get more organised.

DOes anyone have any tips on layout of shelves? It is a basic rectangle shape, 88" long by 30" wide. It is under the stairs so it slopes down, the first 44" width is full height 95", sloping down over the remaining width to height of 66".

There is a full size door opening on the left side as i look at it (am totally useless at explaing dimensions etc)

I was thinking full width shelves along the back wall, but i will still need some storage for hoover/shopping trolley etc so not sure at what height to start the shelves at.

Money is very very tight, so needs to be cheap and cheerfu

Is this of any help
Here ?

I'm absolutely awful at visualising, so can't pick up much from your description, but would have thought most important thing height wise for shelves is not too high or too low, to avoid too much bending/stretching etc. Or if you do have shelves above say shoulder height, if you havea little step stool. What are you planning on putting on the shelves? Tins of food etc?

That sounds exactly like my larder (understairs cupboard in my kitchen). I've got shelves along the side wall from head height to just below waist height, with a slimline veg rack trolley underneath it. I use the back wall and floor space for my ironing board, airer, mop bucket etc and have this screwed to the door. It's amazing how much stuff I can get in there!

wastingaway · 27/04/2010 16:01

In my understairs pantry, it's 39 inches from floor for first shelf and then 19 inches above that for 2nd shelf, another 19 inches for shelf above that.

My vacuum doesn't actually fit under that, but there's plenty of space in the middle of all the shelves for me to stick the vacuum in last.

Is there a window? Or a bricked-up window?

Lizzylou · 27/04/2010 16:05

Something like this would be good for veg?

jetcat · 27/04/2010 16:11

ooh Lizzy, i like the look of that link Will have a proper read later when the girls have gone to bed.

TC - i am thinking of full height shelves, with a little step stool at the bottom to reach as i have loads of crapp to store as i will need room for kitchenalia as well as food stuff, as there is not many actual kitchen cupboards. My friend has a similar design, and her step stool slots nicely into a little gap under the waist height shelf so its not too much of a faff to pull it out all the time to reach for something.

At the moment, i have two of these in which the food stuffs go on, but then i have various plastic boxs/bags etc with anything else i cant find room for. I would love to have everything unpacked, so i can find something when i need it!

We have a similar larder and are about to get a load of shelves and stuff like this

The brackets are all adjustable and we will saw off the wall uprights to the right length as the ceiling gets lower iyswim!

IMoveTheStars · 27/04/2010 17:56

We have those wall mounted things, with moveable brackets, but the shelves are deep enough to easily get 2 cans on (about 7" I think)

Figure out what you want to store in there, and measure it

Our lowest shelf is high enough off the floor to fit things like big boxes of persil/packs of diet coke or squash/crates of wine

jetcat · 27/04/2010 18:35

aspie - does the door close properly with it on? That looks very useful

thanks daisymoo - i love all ikea stuff, but just worried about the cost of fitting it out like that

Jareth, i have had a look at the ikea cheapo shelving unit that i have got in there now, and i think i would start my first wall shelf at the height of the second shelf up on there IYSWIM. That means i can get taller items in underneath, but if i do go for the ikea system, i guess i can have a couple of lower ones aswell - god this is so confusing
