My favourites are a bit whiffy -have tried the trick of putting in the freezer in a bag overnight that I read on here. Any other ideas or should I replace?

I'm posting primarily as a marker on this thread as I need some tips too, but also to register my muttley type sniggering at the sock suggestion. Made my morning, that has

brimfull · 27/04/2010 08:28

well have only been wearing for a day or so this year

have sniffed and there is still a smelly foot odour up close but not as bad as before

hana · 27/04/2010 09:35

i've never had smelly birks - what are you all doing?!?

MmeLindt · 27/04/2010 09:51

Hope you are not going to wear smelly birkies at our next meetup, Strudel.

I binned my last ones when they got too whiffy. Will watch this thread with interest to see what happens next.

BigTillyMint · 27/04/2010 10:14

What type of Birks are you talking about?

Like hana, I've never had smelly birks - the toe-post kind. And I've just worn one pair for 3 weeks non-stop (in India!) and they don't smell at all!

juststrudel · 27/04/2010 11:00

I have never had smelly birkies until now and have been wearing them for over 10 years. I just think that because this pair is my fave - had for 2 or 3 years I have worn them more and I just wore them non-stop for a 2 weeks holiday so they didn't get time to 'breathe'. I don't normally suffer from smelly feet - honest.

I have the toe-post kind and madrid and my oldest which are 11 years old are arizona but they have now been relugated to gardening wear.

MmeL - will make sure the problem is solved before I see you again

Also marking place. have very, very smelly birkies. In my defence, I've had them a few years and wore them whilst pregnant, so there was quite a lot of weight bearing down on them

Am going to try washing, I think. Not my washing machine, the landlady's!

Minnerva · 27/04/2010 15:47

juststrudel-thanks for reporting back,I'm a wee bit stuck now as to what-to-do.
And no,sandals and socks are not an option for me either-the thought of it just makes me want to giggle and takes me back to my European jaunts of the late 80's...........
definitely NOT a good look!

Prinpo · 27/04/2010 19:05

I've been lurking as I have a couple of pairs that could do with a freshen up (to put it mildly ). Felt galvanised to take action so I've just given them a scrub with hot soapy water and put bicarbonate of soda on them. Might add a bit of talc in a mo. The plan is to wait until they dry and then brush off the bicarb. May sprinkly liberally with tea tree oil or whatever I can find.

Would probably be cheaper to just buy some new ones.

sazziej · 28/04/2010 14:40

I have washed my 5 year old birkenstocks (toe post kind) this morning on a 40 wash.... they are currently drying outside... they are a lot cleaner...just not sure how the wash will affect the cork... time will tell..

Prinpo · 28/04/2010 16:13

Tried the bicarb and it made some difference. DH suggested talc, as it does the same as bicarb (ie absorbs moisture) but smells nice too! May try that too.
