Our duvets are too hot and we are not sleeping... What's a good alternative?

we use lightweight duvets (4.5 tog) unless it is really hot

DreamTeamGirl · 19/04/2010 21:17

4.5 tog all year round here too

ClaireDeLoon · 19/04/2010 21:21

In the summer I have sheets and a bedspread, really hot nights the bedspread gets pulled back so we just have sheets.

Rest of the year we have a 4.5 tog duvet. If it is really cold I will get a fleece blanket to cover over my half of the duvet as DP doesn't feel the cold at all.

What tog is the duvet you are using?

emsyj · 20/04/2010 11:30

We have a 4.5 tog goose down duvet for the summer, then if it's really hot we have a pure cotton flat sheet that we use to cover ourselves up. Pure cotton bedlinen is a must - not sweaty like poly/cotton mixes. And we have the windows open most of the year.

Whoamireally · 21/04/2010 22:59

We use a wool duvet which is practically year round - in high summer we just have a sheet if it's not, and in deepest winter I add an extra blanket. Actually, I add an extra blanket most of the time as I feel the cold.

4.5 down duvet most of year apart from the coldest weather in winter and during hot weather - when we change down to a 2 tog duvet. DH prefers blankets and thinks cellular wool or cotton blankets are better. After changing from synthetic to down duvets, I reckon that the down duvets "breathe" more so keep you warm but not hot and clammy as synthetic duvets tend to do.

We have a manky old 12 tog duvet on our bed that seems to serve us all year through. I just push it off if it's too hot, also we have an oscillating fan that I use in high summer. Should get a new one really, would one of those ones that are really 2 that clip together be any use to you? You can use one in the summer, then clip the other half together for the winter.

TWO tog duvet lilymaid???
Where did you buy such an awesome thing? I want one!!

Lilymaid · 22/04/2010 11:38

Oh dear it was a 2.5 tog duvetnot 2 tog. I think I bought mine through another newspaper's website, but it looks to be the same as the one I've linked to.

Downdog · 22/04/2010 12:20

I've got the duvet that is made up of two that you join together by snaps. It's only in deep midwinter that we use both together (13.5tog). Then I use heavier one (7 tog) until it gets too hot & swap for the very light one (4.5tog). If it's a really hot summer we might use empty duvet cover for a few nights, though usually I like the feather cover even in summer.

I brought it new on ebay for £50 inc postage

Nuttybear · 22/04/2010 12:26

I'm now of that age that I get hot and cold!!! So we use 4.5 tog, a folded blanket & a throw. These go up and down as I get hot or cold I also wear bed socks so my feet are warm and my body is just right. sexy

DreamTeamGirl · 23/04/2010 16:34

Thank you, I shall have a look and see if I can afford xx

twolittledarlings · 23/04/2010 22:10

I too have the duvets that is made up of two individual duvets that you join together by snaps. It's only in deep midwinter that we use both together (13.5tog). Then I use heavier one (9 tog) until it gets too hot & swap for the very light one (4.5tog). The 4.5tog is really light weight, and the 13.5 is reaaly warm during the cold winter nights. The 9tog one, we tend to use in teh autumn or spring - now actually.

I think we got this from John Lewis. Cannot remember how much it was but definately well recommended.

vanitypear · 23/04/2010 23:14

switch to a 4.5 tog and put the 13.5 tog away. at 4.5 toggers year round, though the my house is old and windows original!

SuSylvester · 23/04/2010 23:15

we have a 4.5 and a 9 that are curerently fized together

ReshapeWhileDamp · 26/04/2010 12:01

At the moment we're under a duck down duvet and it's too hot, but I think we have a low-tog synthetic duvet somewhere that normally works in Spring.

For summer, I've got a large and extensive collection of patchwork quilts (some antique, some by my mum!) and when it's really hot, we use those with a double sheet underneath..

Nope, we never really moved away from the late 90's Shabby Chic thing here.

trice · 26/04/2010 12:13

I have the 100% silk duvet from the white company. It was a christmas pressie because I get hot flushes at night. It is divine.
